Dinner at Yalumba with some twitterati

Whilst I was in the UK recently, struggling to keep warm and dry (yes in June!) I was delighted to receive an invite on my Twitter Timeline to have dinner at Yalumba with a number of other people from the world of Twitter.

I’ve dined at Le Meridien quite a few times over the last few months, but as yet had not been to Yalumba so I was pleased to accept the kind invitation.

Each evening there is a different theme for the buffet and the theme for Monday evening was Mediterranean.  The restaurant interior was nice and bright and not overly busy – possibly because there was a big football match on I’m guessing ?

Having met everyone at the table, some new people and some previous twitterati pals, I made my way around the extensive spread of food to get some pictures and also to decide what to eat.  I always have to do this as frankly I suffer from the common syndrome at buffets of ‘eyes bigger than the belly’ ! and then don’t have space to try what I really want to.

I tend not to go to buffets very often so this was a real treat and I was literally spoilt for choice with the array of food on offer.  There were lots of choices to suit most palates and although the theme for the evening was Mediterranean, I have to say that I wouldn’t have necessarily picked this up by looking at the food that was on offer.  Having said that everything looked well presented and there was plenty of choice.

For starters, I had a plate of mixed seafood including some tasty smoked salmon with capers and horseradish as well as a little prawn cocktail.  For mains I headed to the pork counter and had some belly of pork which was served in a barbecue sauce and some chicken. The pork was lovely and tender, although if I’m honest I would have preferred some crackling with it.  As it was belly of pork, it was also a bit fatty but belly of pork does tend to be a fattier joint.  The chicken was served in a tasty cream sauce and was beautiful and succulent.

Pudding was the highlight of my meal as the pastry chef, Rasika made a fresh mango crepe for me with nuts, which I topped off with a side of strawberry yogurt ice-cream which tasted was tart and delicious.  I also had a small mango and cream desert which was lovely as the cream was fresh and not the fake cream which is often served in Dubai and is not to my taste.

After the meal I finished with a cappuccino which didn’t look the prettiest that I’ve had but tasted good and strong.

Thanks to Yalumba Chef, Milroy who guided me around the buffet area and helped me with some of my selections, to Pastry Chef Rasika and to the staff at Yalumba and Le Meridien who made our visit possible.

As I only sampled a few of the dishes available – take a look here to see some of the other food choices available.

Dinner at Ms Seafood Bistro with the ‘Fit’ Ladies

As part of being an Ambassador for Le Méridien Dubai Hotel here in Dubai I was given the opportunity to dine in 4 different restaurants during the month of May. A few of the other Ambassadors had already dined in this new bistro and loved the food so of course I had to go and check it out for myself.

I love eating seafood though must confess I don’t cook it anywhere as often as I should do so this was the perfect opportunity to try out one of Le Méridien’s newest dining venues.

Each of the dining experiences I do at  Le Méridien Dubai as an Ambassador have a theme and this one was that the guests invited were my ‘fit ladies’.  These are some of my twitter followers who are into healthy living and exercise as a regular part of their lives.  So with this in mind, I thought M’s Seafood Bistro would be a perfect setting for dinner.

Whilst waiting for everyone to arrive we took advantage of scanning the wine list which was displayed on an iPad – which is a lovely touch and so user friendly.  We also nibbled (ok munched!) on some lovely crisp garlic bread with a tasty creamy dipping sauce.

When everyone arrived we got straight to business and perused the menu and started our evening off with some lovely chilled Prosecco which went down very well.

Conversation flowed easily during our evening as it usually does when a bunch of ladies get together!  Topics were varied and interesting and the best bit is that we all agreed that we would form a ‘fit ladies’ team and enter the Wadi Bi Run ** next year which will be a great opportunity for us to train and run together and no doubt eat together too !

As the discussion flowed so our starters arrived.  I chose the salmon platter which came with squid ink bread and was presented beautifully and was a nice light start to my meal.  Other starters included the warm lobster salad which looked beautiful and was described as ‘melting in the mouth’.  Shrimp cocktail  described as ‘amazing and with shrimp that were ‘impossibly fresh’!  and finally Oysters which looked beautiful and my guest who described them as  ‘fresh and perfect taste of the sea’

Service at the restaurant was impeccable and the staff were highly attentive throughout the meal without being intrusive.  Our main course arrived with a flair as a small cooking station was set up next to our table so that my lobster thermidor could be cooked at the side of the table which was a lovely touch and provided an element of table entertainment.

My lobster thermidor was just how it should be, beautifully presented, tender and succulent and yet also sweet , juicy and rich – it was stunning  Two of my guests chose the John Dory with spinach and lobster sauce which they described as having a beautiful sweet taste, although one of them would have preferred it to be served without the skin as she lost a lot of the lobster sauce by removing it. and said she preferred her starter of warm lobster salad over the main.  My final guest chose the Paella which was great but a tad too creamy for her taste.

Towards the end of the evening a couple of us were tempted with the pudding menu.  My ‘partner in crime’ chose the Creme Brulee which she said was lovely whilst I, a sucker for dessert, chose Ice-cream with Baileys – which whilst it did not look stunning – it tasted great – who can resist Baileys ? not me !

We had a great evening, I must admit I didn’t realise that M’s Seafood Bistro existed until recently, but will definitely go back.  One of my guests scored it as 10/10 and said she couldn’t fault them whilst another commented on Le Meridien’s fabulous marketing and said she will definitely add them to her list of places to go – who could ask for more ?

**The Wadi Bih run is for teams of 5 runners, with each runner completing about 15km to give a total distance of about 72 km.The route for the run follows asphalt roads and graded gravel tracks through the spectacular Hajar mountains and is an uplifting (literally about 1000m of ascent & descent!) therapeutic experience to escape the urban mayhem of the modern UAE. The run starts and finishes in Dibba, Sultanate of Oman. Next race is on 8th Feb 2013 (Watch this blog for more info !)

Le Meridien Hotel – Dubai

Recently I was fortunate to win a competition for an overnight stay and dinner at the Le Meridien Dubai Hotel.

The hotel is close to the airport and if you live in Dubai, no doubt you will have passed it many a time as you are on your way to or from the airport. I must admit I often ‘staycation’ in the UAE, but usually leave Dubai and head towards Oman, Ras al Khaimah or Fujairah – so a local stay actually in Dubai was a new experience.

Check in was done very efficiently in the Royal Club Lounge over a lovely cappuccino which was a great relaxing start to the break.  Once checked in it was time to check out the Executive Club room which was overlooking one of the hotels many swimming pools.  The bedroom was spacious and came with the added bonus of a coffee machine (I love a decent coffee so was pleased with this) and all mod cons in terms of a flat screen TV and DVD and motion activated lights which was a nice touch.  As  for the bathroom, it came equipped with a lovely spa shower and separate bath and lots of fluffy white pillows and dressing gowns – all the things that I love about staying in a hotel.

Lots of hotels offer the above, but Le Meridien also offer lots of little touches which add to your experience.  For example shortly after checking into the room a beautiful fruit basket was delivered.  In addition to the usual room service breakfast menu, there was also a service menu so that you could request additional towels and other supplies as well as a bedtime menu allowing you to request a nightcap and small desert to be placed in the room for a late night indulgence.

After a relaxing afternoon, it was soon time to check out the  Royal Club Lounge for afternoon tea which comprised of a selection of teas and coffees, a selection of finger sandwiches and a choice of beautiful cakes and pastries.  There was plenty of choice and the staff were constantly on hand to ensure that there was plenty to eat and drink.  I sampled quite a few little cakes and pastries and found the cakes very moist and delicious and they tasted as beautiful as they looked.

The afternoon soon merged into the early evening and having found myself unable to move from the comfortable sofa where I had snuggled up reading my kindle,  it was soon 6pm and time for the complementary pre dinner drinks service to start.  Relaxing over a couple of glasses of beautifully chilled white wine and some delicious Canapes for an hour or so, it was soon time to retreat to the room, test out the spa shower (it was great) and to get ready for dinner.

There are many options to chose for dining, but I had chosen Long Yin which serves Cantonese & Szechwan Cuisine.  Le Meridien have a fantastic on-line facility which allows you to research restaurant options and menus prior to check in which is extremely useful particularly if you have never visited before.  The restaurant is a nice size and although reasonably empty at 9pm it soon filled up with a variety of different nationalities, many who were repeat visitors which is always a good sign.

The chef came to the table to offer suggestions for menu selection and his suggestion of a mixed platter of starters was great, in particular the Fried Prawns with Wasabi Cream were fantastic, just the right warmth of wasabi without overpowering the prawns.  The rest of the platter contained various steamed dumplings, spring roll and of course prawn toast.  For main course, I sampled Sauteed sliced barbecued pork in garlic and chili sauce  as well as rack of Lamb rack with chili “Singaporean style” accompanied by beautifully crisp Sauteed fresh pakchoy with garlic sauce and Fried noodles with mixed vegetables.  For desert the chef made the most delicious banana fritters which were crunchy on the outside and warm and gooey in the inside and accompanied by a creamy vanilla ice-cream.  All of this was washed down with a  great bottle of Sauvignon Blanc.  Service was efficient and attentive throughout.

On returning to the room, I had left enough space to partake in a nightcap of a glass of Baileys before sinking into a beautiful comfortable bed.

Having consumed my body weight in additional calories the day before ! – I decided to try out the gym facilities the next morning.  I was pleased to find a really well equipped gym with very modern equipment.  A quick run on the treadmill, was followed by a workout on some lovely high tech weights equipment as well as a very energising experience on a powerplate.

Having worked up a healthy appetite for breakfast, I selected Salmon Benedict from the menu and accompanied this with some items from the buffet, a beautiful pastry basket and a few skinny lattes.  The plan was to spend the rest of the day lounging beside one of the pools, however, the powers that be decided against this & I unfortunately received a call about a leak at home which needed attention – so unfortunately had to cut my day short and dash home to sort this out (if you live in Dubai – you know this is just one of those things you have to attend to from time to time!).

I had a fabulous stay at Le Meridien.  The staff really went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable, the facilities were great and my first Dubai ‘staycation’ was a revelation.  I feel sure that I’ll be heading back to LeMeridien shortly, and if not for a stay, then at least to partake in some more delicious food at one of it’s many restaurants.
