Here you will learn the step-by-step process of how to set up and install round tube old-up legs on the side rails of your DIY Murphy bed. You need to decide if you want to leave the footer end of your bedside rails parts D, square or round it as in the photos below.

Regardless of which one you choose, the installation process is the same for both set-ups.
We recommend you to refer to the construction guide, book #2 to assist you with the steps presented here.

We currently offer the newly designed square tube fold-up legs.

Option 1 : You can leave the footer end of your side rails square as in the photo. This requires no cutting and sanding.

You will still use the template to mark and drill the holes to set up the leg plate for both legs.

Option 2 : You now have the option of rounding the footer end of your side rails square as in the photo. This will require you to cut and finish the footer ends.

You will need to  use the template to mark, round and drill the holes to set up the leg plate for both legs.

Grab the pink sheet template that came included with your wall bed hardware kit. Fold the template along the line in the middle of the sheet running vertically. If you chose to round the footer ends of the bed frame side rails part D, cut along the dotted line so you can mark the side rail for cutting.

If you do not want to round the footer ends your side rails, you do not need to cut the circle on the template.

Now place the pink template on the side rails as in the photo and instructed on the template. Line up the top horizontal line on the template with the top edge of the side rail. Line up the vertical fold with the end of the side rail as in the photo.

Make sure you line up the template properly on the side rails. Improper set up of the template on the wood will cause your leg plates to be mounted off mark. This could cause issues with proper functioning of the legs.
You can use tape to hold the template to the side rails as in the photo.

If you chose to round the footer ends of your side rails, trace the round contour on the pink sheet with a pencil. Use a jig saw to along the pencil line to create the rounded end. You might have to sand the rounded cut to smooth it and make it ready for edging tape.

If you want to leave the footer ends square then SKIP this step and proceed to step 4.

NOTE: We opted to leave the side rail end square for the rest of the following steps.

Use a punch or wood screw to mark the 4 points on the template where the holes for the leg plate are going to be drilled. Punch in the center of the cross lines on the template.

Tip: You can also use a small drill bit to drill a pilot hole in the center of the cross lines.

Notice how in this photo the bed side rail has 4 points punched ready for drilling.
Now use a 1/4″ drill bit and drill the 3 outer markings all the way through the side rail. Do not drill the center mark with the 1/4″ bit.
After you have drilled the 3 outer marks your side rails should look like this one in the photo
Now using a 1/2″ forstner drill bit or spade bit drill the center mark about 1/4″ deep. Do not drill all the way through the side rail. This hole is where the nut in the back of the leg plates will go.
Flip the side rail over so the outer side is facing upwards towards you. Using a 3/8″ drill bit the 3 1/4″ holes about 3/8″ deep to enlarge them for the 3 cap nuts fasteners.
Do not drill all the way through the side rail.
Take the folding leg (left side shown here) and place the plate on the side rail as in the photo.
The nut in the center of the plate should fit into the 1/2″ diameter hole you drilled in step 5.
The other three 1/4″ diameter holes should line up with the holes on the leg plate.
If they dont will will have to make some adjustments by making the 3 holes on the side rail a little larger.
Grab 3 cap nuts included with your hardware kit and insert them into the 3 3/8″ diameter holes on the outer side of the side rail as in the photo.
You may use painters tape to hold the cap nuts in place while you complete the construction process.

This step shows you where the screws and leg stopper that came with the hardware kit is supposed to go.
NOTE: We don’t recommend you attach the folding legs to the bed frame side rails at this time because it will interfere with the rest of the construction process of the bed frame and some of the assembly steps. You will attach them later at the end of the assembly process as outlined in the assembly book #3. Repeat steps 1 to 8 to set up the right leg plate on the right side bed frame rail part D.
