Making a Murphy Bed For Our Granddaughter Part 2

Fun Cricut Project | DIY Baby Shark mural

Going into the school year we knew we would be schooling and working from home so we wanted to turn our guest bedroom into an office/school space while also keeping the ability to use it as an actual guest room. I think ours turned out great.

Modifications

  • Extended the two boards on either side of the bed to go all the way to the ceiling but because of this we had to assemble the bed differently than in the guide
  • Added the decorative trim and built-ins on either side

“Tim Mukaj illustrates how he built his own fully functional Murphy bed using one of the Easy DIY Murphy bed hardware kits. Tim chose to customize his wall bed to perfectly complement his living space.

We thank Tim for sharing this video with us and all of you.”

“My second murphy bed build, using hardware from easydiymurphybed.com. Great company! Awesome product. The hardware comes with blueprints and diagrams with exact cuts needed for the whole project. Extremely easy to follow and complete.”

    To Mike and Nadia,
Just a note to let you know how pleased I am with the Easy DIY Murphy bed project. The horizontal bed fits perfect in my squarish smaller second bedroom. Was a little tight assembling the cabinet sides and top inside that room but I made it work. Krylon spray can black lacquer. “Hand-rubbed” smooth satin finish using craft paper. (aka Brown paper bag) didn’t keep track of the exact time over 3 weeks start to finish. Probably 20 hours plus a little additional for the finish. Anyhow everyone has raved about it. Thanks for a wonderful kit and great instructions.
    Best regards,

    Bernie Ockuly, Apache Junction, Arizona

P.S. The photos don’t do it justice.?

“The project was a success! I hit some roadblocks. The first problem was that I don’t have a framing square. I thought that was no big deal. However, I learned later that was an issue. As a result, my initial cabinet looked lopsided. So, I had to get creative to remount the face panels AFTER the bed was fully assembled. I did this by prying the plywood free (I thought this might be a problem so I didn’t put the screws in at first) then laying the plywood face panels on the floor in front of the bed then laying the bed back on its face and adjusting it to fit then screwing it. I then had to trim the top of the cabinet so it would fit inside. It now looks great. I used a couple of Ikea dresser pulls for the handles and got some metal molding from Home Depot. I didn’t like the idea of the edging tape. Especially because I knew I would be using steel wool and vinegar solution to Stain.

The steel wool and vinegar solution is very easy to make and use. I bought the finest steel wool available. Then soaked it in vinegar. All you need is 12 hours. I had it dissolved for 2 weeks though. The vinegar breaks down the steel and when you paint on the solution the wood reacts to what you see. You can see the Unstained wood in the final photo to see the reaction difference.

I winged it on the strap installation. I couldn’t find that in the instructions. I ended up just using some washers and putting that into the frame with a wood screw. Maybe I missed th instructions for that? Overall I thought the project came out good. I did have to by Forster bits. Then, I almost went out to get a spade bit to drill the bed frame holes. However, I realized I could use a Forster bit for that task as well. You might want to consider including that in the instructions.

Thanks for your product and for sending me the cut list early. I was happy to get the cutting done early! Thanks again”

“My name is Richard and I am a customer of yours. I loved your product so much that I bought a second kit. I live a far distance from family members who are scattered all over America and Japan so I use Facebook to post pictures of projects I work on, in order to let family see what I am up to. Much to my surprise, family and friends have loved the Murphy Bed pictures I posted along with the various other projects I work on. I started making videos instead of just pictures and to my surprise, the videos went over well on Facebook. I have been contacted by several people about the murphy bed and I happily refer them to your site and explain the process of deciding what type of bed and size they want. Anyhow, instead of just sharing my videos with friends and family, I recently decided to make a YouTube page in hopes that others can take a look and maybe use and share ideas and this is why I am writing you. I was wondering if you would mind if I put a link to your website on my video. I am not looking for anything at all in return, I just wanted to ensure I do not infringe on any of your rights and thought it best to ask permission first.”

Finally finished the bed. Great kit, great instructions.

Here are a few pics from my phone, I can grab some better res pics if you would like.

    Cheers,

Hi Nadia, I completed my Murphy Bed with your kit & it went more smoothly than I imagined. The instructions/video were spot-on! Friends have already slept on it & raved about the comfort.

Finished in a peach stain to work with the orange planned for our office in the desert. Kudos to you & easyDIYmurphybed.com

Hello, Just from what would have made it easier here are some ideas to incorporate in your next guide printings.

We are thoroughly happy with our bed. I have an issue that the sides of the cabinet bow a little at the lower side pivot plates. I checked measurements and they are correct, just seem to bow in a tad causing the bed frame to scape upon lowering. I took some wax and rubbed it at the location so it’s not a terrible issue, and I will probably be the only person to notice.

Thanks again, and I have three more to build. The family has seen it and has orders in. :-)

    Have a good day.

    Summer Home project

It took awhile as I don’t go up to my place all the time. Here are some pictures as it is about done. I have a hand strap to pull it down as we can’t decide on a handle yet. Where I had to fit it required a little finesse so there is no visible top section as there really doesn’t need one in this case. The ‘headboard’ going across is going to have a custom-made cover that my wife is making. won’t be thick enough to interfere with the closing but she wants it to look nice. will be velcroed on for easy removal.

The outside is the thin planking with custom framing.

Thanks for all the help. Glad I did it.

    Mike Marlow, WI

I purchased one of your full-size vertical Murphy bed kits on Amazon, and am extremely happy with the product.

Thanks for your help and have a great day.

Attached are some pictures which I am very proud of, as you probably see these all the time.

Thank you, Mike and Nadia! My husband and I really enjoyed making our Murphy bed and found the instructions very helpful. We still need to stain a couple of visible parts, but overall, we are happy with the results!

    Thank you!

Hi Mike, I love our new spare bedroom/kids’ playroom!

    Scott Stachowski, Franklin, Wisconsin

I finished the Murphy… The painting now but sleeping in it and it is awesome. Directions are clear and concise except for 3)4″ spacer in hardware part…? Lots of people here in Naples want these because if all the condos. great market for you… I am a builder for 35 years and enjoy building these… Quick and rewarding… Thank you!

Needing a dedicated office space but not wanting to give up a guest room I created a custom murphy bed and built-in bookcases. Made from solid cherry hardwood and top-quality furniture-grade cherry plywood this built-in has 22 shelves and two full-extension drawers. Plenty of space in a compact form.

You may have seen murphy beds online and found them to be overpowering monoliths in a small space. To break up the wall my design has false drawer fronts and incorporated artwork to break up the linear space.

The bed is easy to use. Just remove the painting and pull it down. That’s it. Along with the integrated headboard, I’ve added wallpaper and lighting to give the bed a more sophisticated feel. Pictured is a twin bed but the design can be customized for a queen or king

    Tim Fox, Virginia

I received the wall bed kit within a week of ordering it which I thought was very quick shipping. My husband and I found the instructions very easy to follow and the hardware was easy to install. We started the project on a Monday and had it fully completed on the Friday of the same week, so it took 5 days and that included one full day for staining the wood and letting it dry. We worked on it each day for approximately 5 hours, taking our time to make sure we did it right. We have a small storage room that we wanted to use for occasional overnight visitors, so the Murphy bed was the perfect solution. We are extremely pleased with how the bed turned out and everyone we have shown it to is impressed that we were able to build it ourselves with such ease. I will definitely recommend your company to anyone looking to take on a similar project.

Hi Nadia, My husband used 3/4“ Marine Grade Plywood. It’s perfectly waterproof, but because of the material we used, the bed is too heavy to lift! Greetings from hot Florida,

    Fabienne Schwyn, Saint Petersburg, Florida

The directions are easy to read and thorough as well. The step-by-step pictures is also a great help. I am extremely happy with this DIY!

    Patti W. Esko, Minnesota, USA

Hey Mike – Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent hardware kit and instructions. I’ve finished the Murphy bed without incident and am quite pleased. About the only snafu I had was that I bought some 3/4-inch Chinese plywood, and found that it wasn’t as flat as I would have liked. Guess you get what you pay for!

Anyway, attached are a couple of pictures of the bed that I thought you might like to see. My wife added the antiqued milk paint finish that really made the project. You can see more pictures of it if you want on my blog site at http://supermediocre.org/index.php/rich/richs-projects/various-projects/.

This was a project using the easydiymurphybed.com vertical Murphy bed kit (full size) to allow an office to also be used as a second guest room. We used three-quarter inch Maple plywood for the majority of the construction.

It gives the room flexibility and blends well with the existing décor and trim in the room. Exposed plywood edges are treated with maple veneer as the kit suggests and crown molding was added to the top of the outer cabinet. LED lighting was also added to the interior.

The entire piece is varnished with multiple coats of satin texture polyurethane varnish.

Steve and Laura G, Appleton, Wisconsin

Mike, We finished! It came out great and we thank you for the hardware and directions to accomplish this task. It was very easy and this is the second one that we have made. We love this bed!

Please feel free to post these pictures. We hope others will enjoy them and receive some inspiration to make their own.

Also, we would love to have the $40 refund that you offered for taking some pictures.

    Thanks

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Here is a picture of the finished Murphy bed. We removed the carpet and to stabilize (which we needed to do anyway) and added An extra headboard. Looks great huh! I want to change the length of the bar for the feet from 60 to 62 inches. Just saying. It worked better.

We took the bed apart many times before we got it right. I stained it three times before I got the right color.

Thanks again for the all the information on building this amazing furniture. We had fun building it.

    Nancy Barnes Washington USA

Nadia, Here are the photos, one with the front, another open, and a third showing how I had to raise the upper bunk.
You may notice that the cabinets are 1.5 inches away from the back wall. This was done to allow access to existing electric outlets.

For some reason I couldn’t get to your website with the address, but got to it through an Internet search.

Nadia has been great with helpful information. I bought two twin Murphy bed kits to build bunk beds and added five inches to the length so as to use twin XL mattresses. I would dissuade anyone from trying what I did and would recommend instead that they purchase the upcoming kit for bunk beds. As the photos show, I built the bunks into a recess. There is no way to lift the very heavy upper cabinet except at the ends; there is no structural support in the middle. I had to raise the ends of the upper cabinet four feet off the floor, adding blocks one at a time, then slide the cabinet across some supports onto the top of the lower cabinet. I was able to secure the cabinets with screws on three sides and add wood blocks along the sides to prevent bowing in or out. I used metal straps to support the opened bunks but would recommend you use the fold-out legs for the bottom bunk. To state the obvious, be sure you have an 8-foot high ceiling! As the photo shows, I added a sideboard to the top bunk to put the ladder against and support a child safety rail–any height above 8 inches and you won’t be able to close the bunk! Expect to spend about $1,100. I spent $1,500 due to expensive wood, extra hardware, molding and trim, the ladder, the safety board, and three quarts of paint.

Mike, Have completed the project. As we had discussed in the past we wanted the bed top to be higher than the plans call for so made the side panels 4″ longer and adjusted the position of the pivot hardware. I had thought this might give me room for a drawer, but it’s just a little too narrow to make for a very workable drawer. I May still try to fit something in there but for the moment it remains an open space.

Since we raised the bed top this makes the legs useless but since you still need support my solution was a sturdy bookshelf. Just did a double thickness of plywood on the ends and made the shelf 10 1/2″ deep.

It’s not very visible but put a flat piece of trim down the center to cover the seam where the two sheets of plywood come together. In your instructions, you say that the seam should be tight together but I challenge amateur woodworkers to get a tight seam. I cut everything on a large table saw and still didn’t get it perfect. Can’t imagine trying to do the cutting with a skill saw. But then that’s what trim is for, to cover your mistakes. Also on the front edge of the side pieces decided not to try to do the laminate tape. Went to my Lowes and bought a couple of pieces of fancy trim and attached with some construction adhesive and a few small brads. Just dressed up the front edges. One thing I added to the build was a crossbar on the bottom of the side pieces next to the baseboard trim. Just seemed to make sense as a stiffener. Also found that 2 1/2″ lags for anchoring the bed were much too short. Ended using 3 1/2″ Just couldn’t get any grab on the wood studs.

All together with a DIY kit, wood materials, stain and finish, and mattress looking at just under $1,000. Still cheaper than what I could have gone out and paid here in Central Florida.

    Joe Josephson, Florida

I purchased your DIY queen size kit along with the instruction. It is very well written and laid out easy to follow instructions. I did make the cabinet deeper than what was called for to be able to put a small shelf on the headboard. I finished it with a natural Danish oil finish. Live edge walnut with turkey oak cross pieces and Zebra wood butterflies, and red oak rails.

Thanks Mike and we thought we’d share pictures of the Murphy bed we built using your fantastic hardware and instruction manuals. Keep up the GREAT work?

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for your e-mail. It’s been busy around here with Christmas coming. I wanted to send the pictures of my bed project when it was completed.

Also thank you for the great plans and hardware to make this happen. I also am including some pictures for the previous bed project I did earlier this year.

The latest one will be handy when my family comes to visit. I also would like to thank you for any refund you have available as you indicated in your e-mail.

    Regards,

    “Hello again Nadia.
Finally completed this project, thank you for your help”.

Simon built these beautiful twin-size bunk beds using the Easy DIY Murphy Bed hardware kits.

By using 2 twin horizontal hardware kits and some custom modifications he was able to create the beautiful bunk bed set up shown in the photo.

Thank you Simon for sending us the photo.

“Attached are photos of my bed. The instructions were very detailed. When I was confused (on the very few exceptions), the DVD video showing the procedure immediately fixed my confusion.

If there are people who have thought of building a Murphy bed but are concerned about their skill level; I would like to say that having Lowes or Home Depot make all the cuts for them would turn this bed into an easy “anyone can do it” project as the hardest part, by far, was cutting the material.

I am very pleased about how solid the bed and the parts are.”

    Donald Houldsworth, Winterpark, Florida

“Hi Nadia, just wanted to let you know we built a DYI bed from you and although it wasn’t quite as easy as you showed:) we are VERY-happy with the end results and it saved us $$$$$$. We were 2 novices and we even had to ” customize ” your design so it took us more like 2 weekends but your instruction books were wonderful and broke it down into manageable components…

We needed an extra sleeping area for our children /grandchildren when they come to visit. The area where we placed the Murphy bed is where our granddaughters like to play “school” so I painted a magnetic/chalkboard on the bed face. We positioned the bed so that when it’s open whoever is laying on it can watch the fireplace.

Thank you again for making this project possible”

    Lynette Johnson, Norton shores, Michigan

“We had to assemble things a bit differently than in the very good instructions you provide, but I build houses (and furniture) so it was not too hard to do.

You sell a great product, based on my limited experience, and I hope to use it again.
The accuracy of the instructions is so important and makes the difference between a good product and a bad one.

My client is happy as well. Thank you.”

    Tom Perot, Sonoma, California

“For years, I loved to save space and as a matter of fact it is not the first time I make a Murphy, but I bought yours and I really liked it. Attached are a few photos of my project. I did this for my friend.”

    Lester M, Miami, Florida

“Here is my work so far! “

    Chris Young, California

“The bed turned out great (pics attached). Great kit!”

    Carmen Pistillo Jr, Mesa, AZ

“Great instructions and product. Just wanted to share the finished product. I used leftover pieces of wood from my work shed and stained them.”

    Alberto Perez, Miami, Florida

“Hey Mike & Nadia, I did get my Murphy Bed project completed! Thanks for your customer support along the way! Here are a couple of pictures. Feel free to use them on your website if you want. It really turned out nice!”

    Craig Mackaman, Des Moines, Lowa

“I wanted to give you some feedback on the product purchased recently. We followed the provided instructions, which were easy to follow, and within a few days, we had our murphy bed ready to use. It works well and we’ve had the chance to use it when company came for the holidays. Thought you might be interested to hear that your product works well.

“I love my DIY Murphy Bed desk which my wife is now using as her office desk as an online 4th-grade teacher. It actually increases the usable space in the room where we no longer need to store a desk when the bed is in use. Thank you for your innovation. See pics attached”

Darryl Denson Sundance Construction Services, Inc. North Port, FL

“I have added a computer work station and desk. Just a little bit more tidying up but our granddaughter couldn’t wait to start jumping on it. Here are a few photos.”

    Stuart Milne, Portland, Oregon

“I wanted to let you know that I have completed the installation of EasyDIY Murphy BUNK beds using 2 of your twin horizontal kits. It took a while to work out logistics, and I had to tweak a few things along the way, but they are installed and awaiting the grandchildren for Christmas.

Your plans and videos are truly excellent and easy to follow. Given the task, the fact that it’s our grandchildren who will be the primary occupants, and the expense of the materials – aside from the kits – I actually mocked up the cabinet sides using cheap Home Depot plywood and the bedsides using MDF.

I had some really good friends who helped to get the plywood to my house (6 sheets of furniture grade PW) and do all the cutting and put on the edging. That took most of a day and was really made easier as my friend has a Festool Trak saw
