Easy Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

We’re taking a slight detour today into the land of homemade dog treats! I love making Abby homemade treats, like her dog cake and pupcakes, but we make her cookies too!

While these cookies are meant for dogs, they’re human-friendly, too, because they’re made with all the regular ingredients. So, if you’re curious and want to take a little taste for yourself, feel free!

Why your dog will love this recipe

This dog cookie recipe combines pumpkin and peanut butter, two things Abby loves! They are combined with a few other ingredients to make a dough, and then you can cut them out, bake them, and – voila! – homemade dog cookies with pumpkin!

These pumpkin dog cookies with peanut butter are the best excuse to use one of those bone cookie cutters. Of course, any shape will work, but the bone ones are just too cute.

ingredients in dog cookies

Ingredients in Pumpkin Dog Treats

  • Peanut Butter: Use your favorite peanut butter but make sure there is no xylitol in it. Dogs cannot eat xylitol – so a natural style peanut butter is best (look at the ingredient list!)
  • Pumpkin Puree: Not pumpkin pie filling! Double-check the label because you want a plain puree.
  • Molasses: For sweetness and my dog goes NUTS anytime I open the jar!
  • Egg: Use a large egg
  • Flour: I like to use whole wheat flour but these can be made with all-purpose as well.

How to Make Dog Cookies

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Overhead shot of wet ingredients being mixed in glass bowl

2. In a bowl, combine the pumpkin, peanut butter, molasses, and egg until the mixture is smooth. Stir in the flour and stir again. The dough will have a shaggy look and will be hard to stir once it’s combined.

Overhead process shot of dough being mixed in glass bowl

3. Flour a work surface and place the dough on it. Knead it until the dough comes together and is no longer sticky. You may need to sprinkle more flour over it.

4. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin into the shape of a rectangle. It should be ¼” thick. Use a 1” or 2” cookie cutter to cut out the dough. Reroll the scraps and cut out more as needed. If you cut bigger or smaller cookies, the baking time will be different.

5. Bake the cookies for 15 to 18 minutes or until they are lightly golden on the bottom. Cool the cookies completely, and then store them in an airtight container for up to a week.

How to Store Dog Cookies

Peanut butter cookies for dogs keep well at room temperature for a week, or you can freeze them for up to a month. I usually have a stash in the freezer and thaw them in small batches.

Freezing Dog Cookies

These freeze well too! Freeze in plastic bags or airtight containers for up to 3 months.

Easy Dog Cookies Recipe FAQ

Can dogs eat homemade cookies?

Our furry family member loves them, but it’s always a good idea to check with your vet regarding what’s suitable for your dog’s diet before you make them. I love them because they’re EASY peanut butter and pumpkin dog cookies, and I know exactly what’s in them.

Can I substitute for the pumpkin?

Feel free to use the same amount of mashed banana in place of the pumpkin.

Can dogs eat pumpkin?

Yes, pumpkin is safe for dogs to eat. It’s a good source of nutrients and fiber!

Can dogs eat peanut butter?

It’s always a good idea to check with your vet, but peanut butter is generally safe for dogs in reasonable amounts. However, they cannot eat xylitol or sweetness so make sure your peanut butter doesn’t have any added ingredients.

Homemade Blueberry Frozen Dog Treats

Abby loves it when we make her homemade treats like pupcakes or dog cookies but in the summer we love making frozen dog treats. It’s hot outside and all that ball catching makes them hot – a nice frozen treat will cool them off just like a popsicle for humans.

Your dog will love these because:

  • They’re bite size
  • Nice and cold
  • Full of blueberries!

Just 2 Ingredients

  • Blueberries: Use any fresh or frozen blueberries
  • Yogurt: Use plain yogurt, any fat content. We always have plain Greek yogurt on hand.
silicone paw print mold with blueberry mixture inside

How to make Frozen Dog Treats For Summer

You can make these in an ice cube tray if needed, but a silicone mold is best. You can find silicone molds on Amazon.

I also used a baking syringe to easily pipe the liquid into the molds, but you can also do this with a spoon or measuring cup, or even a piping bag.

1. Yogurt Layer: Line the base of the mold with yogurt in a thin layer. Freeze until solid, at least 20 minutes.

2. Blueberry Layer: Blend blueberries in a blender or food processor (adding a bit of water if needed). Pipe on top the frozen yogurt and freeze again.

Tips & Substitutions

  • Use any fruit your dog loves in place of the blueberries. Watermelon is another great option.
  • If your dog can’t tolerate dairy, you can use liquid coconut oil in place of the yogurt (make sure they can eat coconut).
  • Use any shape mold, or even use ice cube trays to make them.

You all love your dog recipes – so I need to be sure and make more. My Dog Cake is the most popular recipe on my blog right now!

For Abby’s third birthday I decided to make Pumpkin Pupcakes with Peanut Butter Whipped Cream Frosting. Seriously though, those are all the things she LOVES.

These dog cupcakes are:

  1. Easy to make – you can make big or small cupcakes – and double or half the recipe
  2. Made of stuff that dogs love: pumpkin, molasses, peanut butter
  3. Great for any doggy birthday or occasion!
Close up shot of pumpkin pupcake with icing and a dog treat on top

What are Pupcakes made of?

There are just a few basic ingredients in these doggy cupcakes:

  • Canned Pumpkin Puree (be sure not to get pumpkin pie filling)
  • Molasses (for sweetness and flavor)
  • Honey (for sweetness)
  • Egg
  • Flour, baking soda, baking powder (the usual cupcake ingredients)

Dogs don’t need lots of extra stuff, so the cupcake is super basic. They also don’t need lots of sweetness to like food, so there isn’t much. Abby loves her treats like her mom, so sugar is just fine with her.

Can humans eat pupcakes? I mean – you totally CAN – they don’t have any gross ingredients – but they won’t taste like a regular cupcake!

Frosting for Pupcakes

These don’t even need any frosting if you don’t want, or you could just top with some peanut butter or mashed banana, but Abby is a whipped cream lover.

(She knows what Starbucks looks like and that she’s getting a Puppuchino whenever we go.)

That’s why I decided to top these with peanut butter whipped cream (simply a tablespoon of peanut butter mixed into heavy whipping cream).

We had some mini milk bones leftover from a stay at a hotel and they were the perfect toppers!

My dog biting into a pumpkin pupcake that is on a cake stand with three other pupcakes

How do you make puppy cupcakes?

No mixer needed for these – just stir all the ingredients and scoop into cupcake pans.

You can use liners if you want but no need – the dogs can’t eat them anyway – so it’s easier just to skip them.

You can make about 6-7 regular sized cupcakes or about 18 mini cupcakes, your choice.

Storing Pupcakes

You can make these ahead and store them in the freezer without the frosting. Or they’ll keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3 days. Frost just before serving.

What kind of cupcakes can dogs eat?

Basically – you know your dog. You know what they like and what they can and can’t eat. I’m not a vet or a doggy nutritionist so I cannot advise if your dogs can eat these or not, but I know my Abby can. She isn’t allergic to anything and will eat everything! Please also be mindful of how much your dogs eat – Abby is a small dog so she only got about 1/2 cupcake at a time and some whipped cream.

If your pup likes these, be sure and try my other doggy recipes:

If you want to celebrate your pooch, make an Easy Homemade Dog Cake for them! This peanut butter dog cake is made with simple ingredients and frosted with whipped cream – your dog will LOVE every bite!

Perfect Dog Cake Recipe

We all know that birthdays are a big deal in my house, even if you’re the dog. Last year I celebrated Abby’s first birthday with Pupcakes and this year I made her a cake! It’s her favorite kind of cake too, peanut butter made with applesauce and frosted with whipped cream. Abby loves whipped cream; it’s like her favorite treat EVER.

I love celebrating dog birthdays. Maybe I’m a sucker or just a really good dog mom, but I love all the pomp and circumstance of making her a doggy treat. Homemade dog treats are so easy to make and it’s fun too. Dogs somehow have a sixth sense about treats; they know when you’re making them specially for them.

This easy dog cake makes a 6-inch layer. It’s filled with peanut butter and applesauce and frosted with whipped cream – the perfect dog cake recipe for a puppy party!

dog cake on plate with slice on plate in front, cake has a 2 candle.

Abby has turned into a rambunctious 2-year-old. She’s still her same old anxious self – she’s never far from me – but she loves her ball and swimming. She’s become almost manic about swimming: the second she sees Jordan or Mel in their swimsuits she’s following them around like they’re coated in whipped cream. If they happen to forget to bring her outside with them she (literally) throws herself against the door until I let her out. It’s part hilarious and part annoying, ha!

Since she’s so small (only 15 pounds – her fur makes her look bigger) I let her have all the treats she wants. She doesn’t eat much so birthday cake isn’t something she needs to worry about consuming. (Ah, if only I had her metabolism.)

Caring for a dog like Abby might be hard but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Whenever someone talks about getting a dog I always tell them it’s a lot of work but if you love them enough it’ll be worth it!

If there is one thing Abby loves more than me, it’s her B-A-L-L. (We have to spell it or she goes bonkers!) We usually only play ball outside because my aim is horrible – I’m good at knocking photos off the walls – so we spend a lot of time outside whenever the weather is nice.

birthday cake for dog on white plate

Now that you know the best birthday gift for your pup, let’s talk about how you can make them an easy dog cake for their birthday party!

(What? Birthday parties for dogs are a real thing, you know. We always have Abby’s BFF, Bucky, over for her birthday!)

Making a dog cake is so much easier than a cake for a human. It has simple ingredients and seriously, they don’t care how it looks! You don’t need to buy a dog cake mix, just make your own easy cake!

Ingredients for Dog Cake Recipe

They have most of the same ingredients that adult cakes have, but with a few changes:

  • Sweetener – sugar isn’t great for dogs, but since Abby loves her treats on the sweet side, I add a bit of honey to the cake batter.
  • Flour – you can use whole wheat if you want, but I used all-purpose
  • Peanut Butter – dogs love peanut butter – but only use one without xylitol.
  • Applesauce – you can also use pumpkin puree or mashed banana
  • Oil, leavening, egg – these are all the components that make a cake into a cake.

The best part about making a cake for your dog is that you don’t have to worry about if you over cook it. They don’t care if it’s dry!

I kept the frosting simple by just beating some unsweetened heavy whipping cream. Dogs LOVE whipped cream!

Abby loved her cake. She went to town on the frosting before I could even snap photos! (Also – she had to stand on a box to reach the counter, haha!!)

This post was sponsored by Mirum in 2019, but opinions expressed are my own. Abby loved her birthday cake and present, thanks to Mirum! Since we spend so much time outside I always treat Abby for fleas and ticks. PetArmor Plus just launched at PetSmart and is NOW available at PetSmart stores and on PetSmart.com, which makes it so easy to purchase. I love taking Abby to PetSmart to see the other dogs and pick out new toys (she’s so spoiled!) so I can grab my flea and tick protection while I’m there. (A trip to the vet is just another errand – I love that I can just do all my shopping in one trip!)

Your Dog Will Love Dog Cupcakes!

I was never a dog person and I never thought I would be. I had cats growing up and was solidly on Team Cat. When Mel and I got married his first birthday present to me was a kitten…and I never expected to get a dog.

When Jordan was about 3 we started thinking about getting a dog. I don’t know why, but it seemed like the very middle-class-suburban-American thing to do. Have a kid, buy a house, get a dog. That’s when we rescued Ginger. She was five when we got her and she was with us until last year, when she was 14.

Every year we had Ginger we would celebrate her birthday in January. On her 10th birthday I made her the original version of these peanut butter pupcakes and she loved every single bite.

Pupcakes for Any Dog

That’s our Ginger, on her 10th birthday. That girl knew when a treat was for her the second I walked into the kitchen, before I’d even started baking. Without me saying anything she knew when that can of pumpkin was for a pie or for her.

Ginger loved these cupcakes, BTW. Like, loved them so much she’d have eaten my arm if I didn’t move fast enough.

Last August we brought home our newest addition: Abby. Abby took my heart the second I first held her and she kept ahold of it. The only way I can describe my relationship with Abby is a Twilight reference: we imprinted on each other, hard. If I’m out of her sight for even a minute she freaks out.

Abby turned one on June 27, so of course we had to celebrate her birthday with PUPCAKES!

plate of peanut butter pupcakes

Making your own cupcakes for dogs are EASY. I see now that even Target sells cake mixes for dogs but it’s so easy to make them yourself. Plus: you really only need a few. They don’t last long without pasteurization and dogs can only eat so much before their tummies get upset.

For a special occasion a small batch of peanut butter pupcakes is just right!

How do you make dogs cupcakes?

Like I said: it’s easy. You don’t need any fancy ingredients. These pupcakes are made with peanut butter and banana and a little honey for sweetness. They even have a frosting!

I have two variations of these pupcakes because Ginger was a bit sturdier than Abby. At 68 pounds that girl had an iron stomach and could eat 6 cupcakes without batting an eye. Abby, however, is a bit more dainty and under 20 pounds, and she has a sensitive stomach.

When you’re making these cupcakes, take into consideration how and what your dog eats, and how many cupcakes you need.

  • For a big dog without eating issues, you can make large cupcakes. The recipe as written makes 3 regular sized cupcakes. Double the recipe to get 6.
  • For a smaller dog, make mini cupcakes. Then they can eat a full one or two.
  • When it comes to frosting, you can use cream cheese or banana to mix with the peanut butter. Ginger could handle cream cheese, Abby can’t. Know your dog before feeding them too much of anything new.

What Kind of Cake Can A Dog Eat?

Dogs can eat any cake that is made with food that is safe for them. Be sure to avoid any toxic ingredients when baking for your dog (things like chocolate, grapes, and Xylitol are very bad for them) and also, you know your dog. Be sure to use ingredients they like and tolerate well (not all dogs can eat wheat, for example, which makes these cupcakes not safe for them). This recipe is formulated for dogs with less sugar and additives than a cake a human would eat – dogs don’t need vanilla extract, for example!
