I recently received an invite to attend a Mothers Day Special event at Crate & Barrel in Mirdiff City Centre. Not normally one to attend events as such, I was lured there by the promise of some food and drink demonstrations and free tasting samples from Circle K – how could I resist that !
The event was hosted in the store and started off with a treasure hunt competition which saw some ladies racing around the store searching for items whilst others perused the shop at our leisure, which is always lethal as you leave with a list of things that you need and can’t possibly manage without even though you never thought of owning them before entering the store !

Whilst wandering around we were treated to a mini hand massage by Clarins who kindly provided a goody bag with some samples in – the Beauty Balm Flash as always, comes highly recommended and hides a multitude of sins after a late night/early morning or just when you need a boost (seriously I wish I could bath in it !)
The highlight of the day for me was watching Chef Roy McFarlane from Circle Cafe as he whisked up some speedy canapes and mocktails which we sampled during the morning.
- Salmon & Marscapone Rye
- Mini Yorkshire Puddings with Roast Beef
- Gazpacho shots
- Blue cheese and apple on endive
- Caprese on a stick
- Rice paper rolls with dipping sauce
- Ginger fizz
- Mock champagne
I tasted everything in lieu of breakfast and would definitely make the salmon and marscapone rye and gazpacho shots and rice paper rolls at home.
As for the mocktails ? – they were all too sweet for me – but I’m sure some people would love them and as for mock champagne ? Eeek NO – it has to be the real thing for me or nothing !
Thoughfully, after the event we were emailed with the recipes so I can recreate some of the canapes at home.
The event was hosted by Good Housekeeping and there was also a demonstration of table settings which isn’t really my thing as I’m much more of a casual entertainer – but there was certainly lots of ‘food for thought’ for those who attended as well as some great looking children who were treated to some face painting whilst the event took place.
Those who made purchases were treated to 10% discount and also given a goody bag from Crate & Barrell – yes I bought something that I never knew I needed until I walked around the shop !!
