Chocolate Strawberry Footballs

These treats are the best for any football party, but especially for super bowl Sunday since it’s right before Valentine’s Day! Chocolate covered strawberry footballs are so simple to make – they are a favorite party food because everyone loves chocolate covered strawberries and I feel like they’re a great dessert because they’re sweet but also light – I mean, it’s just fruit, right?

Make these for your Super Bowl party – or any game day – and they’ll be gone before halftime. Kids love these too!

Ingredients Needed

  • Chocolate – It’s important to use a good quality chocolate, like baking chocolate or candy melts. I prefer Ghirardelli candy melts, which you can find in the baking aisle. You’ll want semi-sweet chocolate or milk chocolate melts.
  • White Candy Melts: You’ll need some white for the laces. I don’t recommend white chocolate chips because they struggle to melt sometimes. You can also use white icing (like buttercream frosting).
  • Strawberries: Be sure to grab fresh ripe berries with healthy green stems. The larger the stem the easier it is to dip!

How to make Football Chocolate Covered Strawberries

  • Wash the strawberries and dry in a kitchen towel until completely dry.
  • Melt the milk chocolate and white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowls on 50% power in 30 second increments, stirring between each, for about a 2-3 minutes until completely melted.
  • Prepare a baking sheet with a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper.
  • Hold the strawberries by the leaves and dip them into the melted chocolate. Tap off the excess chocolate. Place on prepared pan and allow to harden.
  • Melt the white chocolate and add to a piping bag or sandwich bag. Cut off a very small tip and pipe the football laces: a long middle line and 3-4 small lines crossing them on the front of your berry.
  • Refrigerate until the chocolate is set.

Expert Tips

  • Make sure your strawberries are full dry for the chocolate to stick the best. Any water left on the berries will seize the chocolate.
  • You want to melt your chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. You can use a glass bowl, but I like using paper bowl for easy cleanup. You can also use a microwave safe coffee mug.
  • If you prefer, you can melt the chocolate in a double boiler on the stovetop over medium heat.
  • If your chocolate has trouble melting, add a few drops of canola oil or vegetable oil to help it along.
  • These would also be a fun topper for football cakes or cupcakes!
  • Easily make baseballs (with white and red candy melts) or basketballs (with orange and black melts) in the same manner.

FAQs

These Football Rice Krispie Treats are the best dessert to make for game day! They are bite sized and just like classic Rice Krispies Treats but made into a football shape – perfect for that football lover in your life.

Super Bowl Rice Krispie Treats

Rice Krispie Treats are always made with easy ingredients and this recipe is no different! Once you have your cereal treats you use a mini football cookie cutter, but if you do not have one you could simply take a knife and cut the shape out by hand!

These football treats are the best for football season because they are delicious and the perfect addition to any platter during the game. You could even dip these into my football nutella board or my football peanut butter dip! These are dipped in chocolate with frosting laces – the perfect football dessert.

Ingredients Needed

  • Rice Krispies: You can actually use any flavor your want.
  • Mini Marshmallows: Marshmallows are the main ingredient in Rice Krispie Treats – they are what makes them gooey and chewy.
  • Unsalted Butter: You can also use margarine.
  • Chocolate Chips: Once you melt the chocolate and dip the cereal treats they’ll look like footballs. You can also use chocolate buttercream frosting.

How to make Cereal Treats

  • Make your cereal treat mixture in a large pot. Melt butter and miniature marshmallows together over medium low heat, then stir vanilla extract and cereal into the marshmallow mixture.
  • Press into two 9-inch square pans. This makes them thinner than using a 9×13-inch pan, making them easier to cut into a football shape.
  • Cut the treats into football shapes using a cookie cutter, or you can break of rectangles and form them into the shape of a football.
  • Melt chocolate candy melts and dip each football into the candy. Use cookie icing or melted white chocolate to pipe the laces onto the footballs.
mini Rice Krispie treats in the shape on footballs with brown and white frosting on top to resembles a football on a field.

Expert Tips

  • When using marshmallows, the fresher the better. Stale marshmallows won’t be as gooey. This goes for the cereal too!
  • When you are baking the cereal treats, line the pan with foil or parchment paper and spray with cooking oil so that they won’t stick!
  • Chocolate melts best when it is being stirred every 30 seconds. You can also use chocolate chips or baking chocolate.

FAQs

Can you freeze these treats?

You can! Freeze them in an airtight container for up to one month.

Can I use big marshmallows?

You can, but you will need to cut them into smaller pieces first.

Football Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Make my go-to cereal treat recipe and cut them into football shapes!
Course Dessert, Snack
Cuisine American
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Calories 298kcal
Cost $6

Ingredients

  • 9 cups (237g) Rice Krispies Cereal
  • 20 ounces (566g) mini marshmallows, divided
  • 8 tablespoons (113g) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon (15ml) vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces chocolate candy melts
  • White Frosting for decorating (see note)

Instructions

  • Line two 9-inch pans with foil or parchment and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Measure out cereal and place in a large bowl.
  • Measure out 15 ounces (1 ½ packages) mini marshmallows and set aside.
  • Melt the butter over medium heat in a large saucepan. Then add the marshmallows and stir until melted. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  • Add cereal and stir to coat with the marshmallow mixture. Stir in remaining marshmallows and immediately pour into prepared pans. Press firmly to compact. Tip: spray wax paper with nonstick cooking spray so you can press without it sticking to your hands.
  • Let set until firm. Remove from pan using foil and remove foil from the bottoms. Use a football shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes.
  • Melt chocolate according to package directions (I like using a paper bowl and melting on 50% power in 30 second increments, stirring after each). Dip each football in the chocolate and place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Let harden, then add the laces using frosting.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. To freeze, let cool completely then cut into bars and wrap each individual bar in wax paper and freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Video

Notes

  • Use any flavor Rice Krispies cereal.
  • You can use any size marshmallows, just make sure you’re only using 15 ounces in the actual mixture – you’ll want mini ones to mix in or you’ll have to slice large ones to fold in at the end.
  • These stay extra gooey but will get stale if not stored properly.
  • Only use FRESH marshmallows and not-stale cereal for best results.
  • You can use chocolate chips in place of the melts, or use chocolate frosting.
  • I used a can of icing in a piping bag for the laces, but you can also use cookie icing or melted white chocolate.

S’mores Dip for Fall

I like to think of this recipe as a good transition between seasons because of the mixture of flavors. Which is great because then you can eat it more often around the year! It may not seem obvious, but pumpkin and s’mores always go great together! This recipe mixes pumpkin puree, chocolate ganache and marshmallow to create this masterpiece. It is soft and so good when it is served warm! This dip is my favorite when asked to bring something for a party!

S’mores Dip Ingredients

  • Pumpkin Puree: Not pumpkin pie mix.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice: Will smell amazing and be tasty!
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: Be sure not to use evaporated milk, they are different.
  • Semi-sweet or Milk Chocolate Chips: Either one is a great choice!
  • Heavy Whipping Cream
  • Marshmallow Cream: Such a good ingredient, and a main portion for this s’mores recipe.

How to make S’mores Dip

  • Stir pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk together in a small bowl. Set aside.
  • Place the chocolate chips and heavy whipping cream in another small bowl or glass measuring cup. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between each, until the chocolate is melted and smooth (about 1 minute total in my microwave).
  • Pour the chocolate slowly over the pumpkin mixture. Use the back of a wooden spoon or a knife to swirl it.
  • Place the marshmallow cream and remaining ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk in yet another bowl. Heat for 20-30 seconds, until it stirs smooth. Pour slowly over the top of the chocolate pumpkin mixture and swirl again.
  • Serve immediately with gingersnaps, graham crackers, fruit, or pretzels for dipping.

Dipping Ideas

S’mores dip is so good because pretty much anything will taste good with it, but I personally love using pretzels or gingersnaps. You could use fruit and maybe even some vegetables! Graham crackers a classic dipper and they are great in this recipe too.

Expert Tips

  • If the dip thickens, reheat it to thin it out.
  • This recipe should be served immediately after making it to taste its full potential.

Sure, you’ve seen the viral snackadiums people make for the Super Bowl – the ones with appetizers and guacamole but have you ever seen a Dessert Snackadium? With sprinkles and cake batter dip?

What is a Snackadium?

A snackadium is a football stadium built out of snacks. Most of the time you see savory ones with stands made out of different appetizers like pigs in blankets, pepperoni pinwheels, chips, veggies, and other charcuterie like things. Usually it has bean dip and/or guacamole in the center for the field.

This version is a Dessert Snackadium – the stadium is made out of pizza crust and filled with cake batter dip and green frosting. The people are sprinkles and the players are pizza dough!

can of pizza crust

What do you need to make it?

I built my snackadium out of Pillsbury Pizza Dough. I’ve always loved the versatility of that dough! You could use any kind of pizza dough you want.

The filing is chocolate cake batter dip with some green tinted vanilla buttercream on top.

How do you make a Snackadium?

  • I baked my dough on an inverted budnt pan, covered in foil and sprayed generously with cooking spray. I baked it longer than you would a pizza to eat, because I wanted it completely cooked through so it would stand up and not collapse.
  • Now, once you have your field, you need players. And goal posts. I used crescent rolls for the players. One triangle of the crescent roll dough was cut into about 16 small triangles and 16 tiny crescent rolls were formed. Half I dipped in blue candy melts, half I dipped in white, for each team. The crescent roll dough was also used for the sign.
  • I fashioned my goal posts out of some of the pizza dough scraps from the snackadium, but you can also use some of the crescent roll dough.
  • The flags were made from Fruit By The Foot, cut into triangles and wrapped around toothpicks. Gotta have team flags!
  • Brush the inside of the snackadium with corn syrup and press sprinkles to represent people.
  • Fill the bowl with dip (you could also use chocolate dip) and then top it with green frosting. Use white frosting to decorate the field then place the players and goal posts.

What do you dip in Cake Batter Dip?

The snackadium, while gorgeous, needs to be edible. The dip is great, but how do you eat it, besides with a spoon? You need dippers! You can use any and all manner of dippers for your cake batter dip: Pie crust dippers, Bugles, sweet Chex Mix, pretzels. You could use chocolate chip cookies or sugar cookies too!

Expert Tips

  • Color the players however you want – be sure to use the colors from the big game.
  • Make sure your piza crust is really golden brown – you want it fully done (crunchy) so it holds up.
  • Spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray really well so it pops off easily.

Dessert Snackadium with Pillsbury

A showpiece centerpiece that looks like a football stadium
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Total Time 5 hours
Servings 24 servings
Calories 124kcal
Cost 10

Ingredients

For the Dip and Field:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese room temperature
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup (113g) powdered sugar
  • 1 cup Devil’s Food Cake Mix (or chocolate cake mix)
  • 1 can white frosting
  • Green Food Coloring

For the Snackadium:

  • 1 can Pillsbury Pizza Crust
  • 1 can Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
  • ¼ cup corn syrup
  • Nonpareils
  • Candy melts in your teams colors
  • Edible Food Writers
  • 1 Fruit by the Foot
  • Assorted Dippers

Instructions

Snackadium:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Turn a 12-cup fluted bundt pan upside down on the cookie sheet. Cover it with foil and spray with cooking spray.
  • Unroll your can of pizza dough and cut it in half. Place half of the dough over one side of the budnt pan and repeat with the remaining dough. Press the seams together, and trim around the edges as needed. Use those extra pieces to fill in any gaps you need to completely cover your overturned bundt pan. Save two small extra pieces for your goal posts!
  • Bake for 14-18 minutes. It will be browner than it would be if you were going to make pizza; you want it done and not soft, otherwise it will collapse. Let it cool for at least 30 minutes before removing from pan and turning it over.

Decorations:

  • Goal Posts: Take two small amounts of leftover pizza dough and roll them into 3 ropes of dough. Cut 1 rope in half, so you have 2 long pieces and 2 short. Assemble the pieces in the shape of the goal post and press the edges together to seal. Repeat for second goal post. Bake for about 5 minutes on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
  • Players: Unroll your crescent rolls. Separate 2 triangles from the rest of the package. Reserve the remaining rolls. Cut 1 crescent roll triangle into about 16 smaller triangles. Roll into tiny crescent rolls. Bake for just a few minutes. Once cool, melt some candy melts in desired colors and dip half the tiny crescent rolls in each color. Let harden.
  • Sign: Cut a square from the 1 triangle of crescent roll and bake for about 5 minutes. Once cool, write a desired message on the sign with edible food writers.
  • Spectators: Place corn syrup in a small bowl. Using a basting brush, brush the corn syrup around the inside of your baked snackadium. Sprinkle generously with nonpareils, to represent the spectators. Be sure to put your “people” all the way up to the top of the sides of your snackadium. Chill for at least 15 minutes.
  • Flags: Cut triangles from your Fruit by the Foot strip and wrap each end around a toothpick. Stick around the top of the snackadium for decoration.

Dips:

  • Cake Batter Dip: Mix 4 ounces room temperature cream cheese and 4 tablespoons room temperature butter with a hand mixer. Mix in 1 cup of cake mix (dry) and 1 cup of powdered sugar. Add 2-3 tablespoons of milk until mixture reaches your desired consistency. Spread your “dirt” cake batter dip (Devil’s Food) in the bottom of your snackadium.
  • Reserve half the can of vanilla frosting. Tint the rest green and spread it over the cake batter dip.
  • Place the rest of the white frosting ziploc bag with the corner snipped off. Pipe a large rectangle in the center of your field. Divide your large rectangle into 12 small ones, using your frosting, to create the playing field and yard lines. If you wish to make “end zones” you can tint some of your leftover white frosting a color and fill in each of the outer rectangles with different colors. Place a goal post in each end zone.
  • Place your tiny crescent roll “players” on the field and on the sideline. You can use a chocolate chip for the football. Attach the sign to the snackadium with a toothpick.
  • Serve with any dippers you want!

Notes

  • Color the players however you want – be sure to use the colors from the big game.
  • Make sure your piza crust is really golden brown – you want it fully done (crunchy) so it holds up.
  • Spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray really well so it pops off easily.

Best Chocolate Royal Icing Recipe

Sure you’ve heard of – or maybe made – Royal Icing before, but have you ever made Chocolate Royal Icing? Whenever you need to make a brown icing color, instead of using food coloring, add cocoa to make chocolate flavored icing. It’s perfect for frosting chocolate sugar cookies or chocolate cut out sugar cookies!

Chocolate Royal Icing tastes better than plain and it’s no more difficult to make. It’s the perfect frosting for football cookies!

ingredients of chocolate royal icing

Ingredients in Chocolate Icing

  • Meringue powder: if you don’t have this you can use one egg white instead.
  • Cocoa powder: one cup cocoa powder together make this an ultra chocolatey goodness recipe. You can use regular unsweetned cocoa powder or Dutch process for a deeper color and flavor.
  • Water: warm water is needed to bring the icing altogether.

Be sure to see the recipe card below for full ingredients & instructions!

How to make Chocolate Royal Icing

  1. Place powdered sugar, meringue powder, cocoa powder, and vanilla in a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment.
  2. Add warm water and mix until stiff peaks form, adding another tablespoon of water during mixing. You may add water as you mix but only add ½ teaspoon at a time. You want the consistency to be able to hold a peak but the peak curls but doesn’t disappear in on itself.
  3. Place about half the icing in a piping bag fitted with a #2 or #3 round tip. Be sure to cover the mixing bowl with a damp paper towel so the remaining icing doesn’t dry out.
  4. Outline your cookies with the icing and let the cookies dry for about 15 minutes or until the icing is firm enough that flooding the center won’t break the edge.
  5. Add a bit more water to the remaining icing, mixing until the icing drizzles back on itself and slowly dissipates, but isn’t so runny it just disappears on itself. Place in another piping bag fitted with a #5 round tip and flood the centers of the cookies, using a toothpick or spatula to carefully spread the icing to the edges.
  6. Let the frosting completely harden this may take hours or overnight.
  7. Add white laces to the chocolate hard icing using vanilla frosting if you’re making footballs. You can just add a bit of frosting or melted white chocolate to a ziplok bag and cut off one tip, or use a #2 round tip with a piping bag.

Expert Tips

  • For a clean and sharp icing edge, use a toothpick or spatula to carefully spread the icing to the edges.
  • If your frosting is too runny you can add more powdered sugar.
  • If the royal icing is too thick, add a bit more water.

  • Use a small round tip (Wilton 2 or 3) to pipe the edge of the cookies. Let dry. Then change the tip to a 5 and flood the center, using a spatula to help you spread the frosting to the edges. Allow to dry completely before doing any other decorating.
  • If you're making football cookies, use white frosting or melted white chocolate to pipe laces.

Notes

  • Sometimes I find that sweet spot of water where when I pipe it’s smooth enough to not run, so I just do the edges and fill the cookie all at once. Other times if it’s too stiff, I’ll pipe the edges, let it dry, then add more water to thin and flood the center.
  • If the icing is too thin, add more powdered sugar.
  • If the icing is too thick, add more water.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

If you’re throwing a Super Bowl or football party, you need to know how to make Football Brownies! This easy recipe uses a homemade brownie mix recipe and is topped with an easy football decoration. These are touchdown brownies without a cookie cutter and everyone will love them.

Fun and Easy Football Brownies

There are two times a year I make football themed treats: in August, for my husband’s Fantasy Football Draft, and in January, for the Super Bowl. The big game is in less than two weeks, so the food football planning is running high in my house. (Mainly for the blog, Mel doesn’t allow us to watch the game with him, lol.)

I don’t love watching football (or any sports, really) but I do love football food. Football food is pizza and punch, cheesy dip and peanut butter dip…and football themed desserts!

Stupid Easy Homemade Football Brownies are for anyone who wants something that’s so simple it’s foolproof, yet cute and festive. Plus, if you’ve ever wondered how to make football brownies without a cookie cutter…this is your resource.

  • To turn these into touchdown brownies, cut the brownies into squares. Or use a football shaped cookie cutter.
  • Then add laces to the cut squares using vanilla frosting or white chocolate.

Expert Tips

  1. You can use my brownie recipe or use your favorite, or use a box. If you’re using a box mix, just bake the brownies according to the box directions.
  2. If you want to be all fancy, you can use a football shaped cookie cutter. But I’m lazy and boring, so I like to just cut them in squares!
  3. Once they’re frosted, the frosting will semi-harden so stack them carefully.
  4. Serve them on top of a bed of green sprinkles for a cute football themed display.

How to make a Football Cookie Cake! Use any cookie recipe or dough to make an easy football cookie cake!

Honestly? If I’m being truthful, I’m never ready. Football just kind of…exists for me. For my husband? It’s a whole ‘nother ballgame. He’s, like, down with the football. Football is Mel’s thang. And I’m just the wife who sits back, scolds the kid for rolling her eyes, and downloads extra books on her kindle from September-January.

Every year I make some sort of special FOOTBALL shaped treat for the playoffs and Super Bowl. This year it’ll be a Football Cookie Cake!

This cookie cake is easy and delicious – and you can make it with almost ANY of my cookie recipes.

Really, the recipe is just the method for how to make the football cookie cake.

How to make a Peanut Butter Football Cookie Cake Recipe

Seriously, you can make this football cookie cake with any cookie recipe. Almost any of my cookie recipes can be turned into a cookie cake. Here’s the rule of thumb:

If a recipe has 1/2 cup butter or 3/4 cup butter then you can bake it in a 9-inch round pan.

If it calls for 1 cup or more of butter, then it’s best baked in TWO 8-inch or one 9×13-inch pan.

Now, the cookie as shown is a peanut butter cookie, but you don’t have to make it that way. You can use any of the following recipes and bake them using the method I explain in the recipe.

I learned this method of football cookie cake making from my friend Ashton over at Something Swanky. A few years ago I made 13 football cookie cakes for a bar mitzvah, using her method and my chocolate chip cookie recipe.

How to make an easy football cookie cake recipe

1. Pan: Bake your cookie cake in a 9″ round pan. Let it cool completely. Make sure you’ve lined the pan with foil or parchment for easy removal.

2. Cut: Make two slices off-center of the cookie, 1″ apart. Discard the 1″ strip. (i.e. eat it)

3. Form: Melt some chocolate chips. Use a knife to coat the inside cuts with chocolate, then press the halves of the cookie cake together. Voila! You have a football.

4. Decorate: Pour the rest of the chocolate on top and spread to the edges. Let it dry, then use white chocolate or frosting to make the laces.

5. Eat.

You can also use chocolate frosting for the topping instead of melted chocolate.

This will last for 2-3 days on the counter in an airtight container. Or you can freeze the cookie for up to a month.

Ingredients

Use the following recipe for the cookie cake itself or choose one linked in the notes:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup peanut butter
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 1 cups chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped peanuts optional

To assemble the cookie cake (with an 8-inch or 9-inch round cookie cake):

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil or shortening
  • 1 tablespoon White frosting or melted white chocolate

Instructions

  • Cream butter, peanut butter, and both sugars in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, about 1 minute. Add egg, vanilla, milk, baking soda, and salt and mix until combined. Slowly add flour and mix until dough just comes together, scraping the sides of the bowl as necessary. Stir in 1 cup chocolate chips and nuts.
  • Line a 9” round cake pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. Press dough into pan.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F.  Bake for about 18-22 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Let cool completely before continuing.
  • To make the football: make two cuts in the cookie cake, 1” apart right on each side of the center. (It’s like you’re cutting it in half but you’re making two long cuts just off center.) Remove the 1” cookie piece.
  • Melt remaining 1 cup of chocolate chips with oil or shortening in the microwave on high in 30 second increments, stirring between each. (The oil is to help keep the chocolate from seizing.)
  • Use a knife or offset spatula to spread some melted chocolate inside the cut halves of the cookie, then press them together to seal. Once the chocolate hardens, the cookie will stick together. You now have a football shaped cookie cake!
  • Pour the remaining chocolate over the top and spread evenly. Chill to set the chocolate, then pipe on the laces using white frosting or melted white chocolate.

Notes

Other Cookie Recipes to use:

If you don’t want to top the cake with melted chocolate, use chocolate buttercream frosting.

BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe

Are you a sweet or salty person? They say that people usually favor one or the other; I’m clearly a sweet! Sometimes though I get a salty hankering and I just want something salty and crunchy, like chips or snack mix. These cravings usually make me reach for one of two things: BBQ chips or Chex Mix.  Last time I had the craving I thought…why not make BOTH?

I think I love BBQ seasoning so much because it’s salty and sweet at the same time. I’m borderline obsessed with making my own homemade BBQ seasoning because I can sprinkle it on everything: chips, popcorn, baked potatoes…the options are endless.

When I decided to make my own Chex mix, I knew I wanted to make it in the slow cooker. This makes it easy and you don’t have to babysit it like you would if it was in the oven. I’ve been slightly obsessed with crockpot recipes this year…so beware.

Chex mix in crockpot

Homemade Chex Mix Recipe Ingredients

One thing I love about making Chex mix at home is I can add anything I want to it. What’s your favorite part of regular Chex mix? Mine are the cereal pieces. I also love the pretzels…and pretty much everything in it. The one thing I always miss is nuts. Adding nuts to any snack mix adds crunch and flavor and, in the case of almonds, some protein.

  • 4 cups of any Chex Cereal (I used Rice Chex)
  • 2 cups of any nuts (I used raw Almonds)
  • 3 cups of filler, like pretzels or a combination of pretzels and other crunchy bits (I used all pretzels)

If you want to add something sweet, like candy, do that after the Chex Mix is done.

How to make BBQ seasoning mix

There are a few must-have ingredients in homemade BBQ seasoning:

  • Brown sugar gives it the sweetness
  • Smoked paprika gives it that smokey flavor, along with smoked chili powder. Using the regular versions won’t make them taste like BBQ chips, so be sure and get smoked.
  • Round out the BBQ flavor with onion and garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Mixed together, this simple BBQ seasoning mix can be stored in a jar in the pantry and sprinkled on everything from vegetables to potatoes to popcorn.

bowl pouring sauce on Chex mix

How to make Chex mix in the slow cooker

I highly recommend that you use a slow cooker liner. It makes it easier for clean-up and it’s less likely to burn. If you’re not using al liner, be sure to spray the insert with nonstick cooking spray.

Simply mix them all in the crockpot and then prepare your topping.

To get the BBQ seasoning mix to stick to the snack mix, I mixed it with butter. Stir up the mixture and pour it into your slow cooker. Cook on low, stirring every 20 minutes, for about an hour to an hour and half. Once you just start to smell it, it’s done.

Homemade Chex Mix Recipe Tips

  • Use your favorite snack items, just use a total of about 8 cups.
  • Be sure to stir this often. If the mixture sits in one spot too long it can burn.
  • Turn the hot mix out onto a cookie sheet and let it cool, then store it in an airtight container. It’ll last up to a week but will be gone before that!

EASY Football Cake Recipe

I’m all about football…food. Yep, I’m the typical “don’t watch football but love football food” person. My husband watches football religiously and I don’t have anything against it but the anxiety of it stresses me out SO much.

This year my daughter has started watching too, much to her dad’s elation. It’s become a family affair: they watch football and I watch my iPad.

When it comes time for playoffs or the Super Bowl I always go into overdrive thinking about fun football food to serve. Football shaped food is my favorite (see below for a list of ideas) and I decided this year I needed to make a football cake.

I’m going to show you how to make a football cake without a special pan with just a few simple steps.

How do you make a football cake?

First, start off with any flavor cake recipe or mix. I used a cake mix for this but you can also make a yellow cake or homemade chocolate cake, or even a red velvet cake or funfetti!

You only need one 9-inch or 8-inch round to make the football, so if you have extra batter you can make cupcakes or make a second round cake to freeze for later (or make a double layer cake).

To make the cake in the shape of a football, you just need to cut out the center of the round cake!

  1. Slice an inch strip out of the center of the cooled cake. To do this, locate the center and make a slice 1/2-inch above and below the center.
  2. Remove the strip of cake.
  3. Place the two semi-circles together to form the oval/ellipse/football shape.
  4. Frost like a football!
cake on plate decorated like football with green frosting like grass on wood background

How to frost a football shaped cake:

I used a can of chocolate frosting but you could also use your favorite homemade chocolate frosting. Frost the outside of the cake.

To pipe the laces, use vanilla frosting or a can of white icing to pipe the laces. Place the frosting in a pastry bag and frost one of two ways:

  • Simply snip off the corner of the pastry bag and pipe round laces without using a special tip, or
  • Use Wilton tip 47 or Ateco 45 to pipe the flat laces and piping.

Then, for decoration, you could use a grass tip with green tinted icing for the grass around the edges!

An easy for a birthday or game day – whenever you make this it will be a huge hit!

Ingredients

  • 1 15 ounce box cake mix, any flavor
  • Milk, water and eggs to make the cake (called for on the box)
  • 1 16 ounce can chocolate frosting
  • 1 16 ounce can vanilla frosting
  • Green food coloring optional

Instructions

  • Note: you only need one round cake to make this football cake, unless you want to make a two-layer cake. See notes for baking options.
  • Prepare one 8-inch or 9-inch round cake pan with nonstick cooking spray (use the kind with flour in it). Alternately, you can butter and flour the cake pan.
  • Mix cake batter according to package directions. Pour half the batter in the prepared pan (see note about remaining batter). Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 22-28 minutes. Cool completely.
  • Remove cake from pan. Level off with a serrated knife, if needed.
  • Cut out about a 1-inch strip from the center of the cake. To do this, locate the center of the cake and move your knife down about half inch, slice. Repeat, moving up half an inch. You’ll then half two semicircles and one long skinny rectangle of cake. Remove the rectangle strip of cake. Push the two semicircles to meet and you have a football shape.
  • Place cake on serving plate. Frost cake with chocolate frosting.
  • Fit a pastry bag with the Wilton 47 or Ateco 45 tip. Place a small amount of the white frosting in a pastry bag (about 1/3 of the can). Frost laces and piping on the cake. (You can also do this without a tip; just snip off the tip of the piping bag. Your piping will be round instead of flat.)
  • If desired, tint the remaining frosting green and pipe around the cake, using the grass tip (Wilton 233 or Ateco 234).
  • Store loosely cover until ready to serve.

BEST Homemade Chili Cheese Dip

This easy cheesy chili dip is comfort food at it’s finest: a hot layer of chili and cream cheese mixed with cheddar cheese. It’s such a delicious way to eat your weight in tortilla chips. It has just three ingredients and is so sinfully good!

When I was thinking about what to make for my newest game day appetizer, I knew I wanted to do a hot and cheesy dip. I’ve made pizza dip before, as well as a cheesy pesto dip, and both were hits. Chili dip was my next great idea.

It turns out that chili cheese dip isn’t just a good appetizer, it’s a fantastic dinner too. He inhaled this dip while watching the playoff games last weekend!

dip in pie plate

3 Ingredients Needed

  • Cream Cheese – Make sure that it’s softened. I don’t recommend using low fat or nonfat cream cheese – the dip will taste better with regular full fat.
  • Cheese – I also use real cheddar cheese (not the fake stuff – I know traditionally it’s made with velveeta cheese but…no) because I love the flavor of cheddar cheese on chili. You can also use pepper jack cheese.
  • Chili – When it comes to chili, just be sure to get a brand and flavor you like. It’s easy to make this dip vegetarian by using vegetarian chili, or use one with meat or beans as you wish. We love using hormel chili!

How to make Chili Cheese Dip

  • Stir together cream cheese and chili until combined. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Spread mixture in the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate or similarly sized pan. Sprinkle with remaining shredded cheese.
  • Bake until hot and cheese is melted, 10-15 minutes. Garnish with cilantro.

Expert Tips

  • You can also do this in the slow cooker – see my crockpot chili cheese dip recipe for how to. You can also make that one on the stove top.
  • Storage: Store leftover chili cheese dip in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Reheat it in the microwave.
  • Serve with tortilla chips, Fritos, or Frito Scoops.
  • Want it spicier? Add some diced or pickled jalapenos on top!
