Multi-Colored Sprinkle Rimmed Frosting Shots

Birthday Frosting Shots

A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine turned 40 and we threw her a party with our closest friends. She’s a mom of 3 boys and rarely gets to feel girly (it’s all baseball and basketball and rough and tumble over at her house) so we pampered her with an extra girly evening full of flowers and food and fun.

I was in charge of desserts for the party (obviously, when am I not?) and I made an assortment of things like red velvet cake, lemon tarts, and drunk cherries. (PSA, if you make those cherries, I urge you to re-think soaking them for a full week before serving or you will go from 0 to drunk in no time at all!) I’d originally planned to make lots of flowery decorations for her cake using canned frosting (the cake was frosted with the real stuff) but then I got lazy and did my default rosette pattern instead. I found myself with a can of frosting and as I was setting up the bar I thought…why not mix FROSTING with VODKA? Sometimes I’m a genius.

These frosting shots are so easy to make, and so good – everyone loves them. Two ingredients – which are easy to switch up for flavor variations or for what you already have – and how fun do they look? Drink your frosting – with a side of vodka!

Three Sprinkle Rimmed Frosting Shots

How to Make Frosting Shots

I did a few trial frosting shots as singles to taste, but I found that it is better (and almost easier) to make a few shots at once instead of one at a time.

The first time I made these frosting shots, I just tried to shake frosting with the vodka, which left clumps. Then, when I was making them for the dessert table, I wanted to have several prepared at once. I decided to melt the frosting a little bit before adding the vodka and it worked wonderfully.

Did you know you can heat canned frosting in the microwave and it becomes warm and pourable? That’s the consistency you want. You can also use scratch frosting, just make sure its super room temperature (or even warm it up a bit too).

Instead of using a cocktail shaker, I used a shaker smoothie bottle to make the frosting shots in, or you can also use a jar. You want to shake these up vigorously to combine the vodka with the frosting. The mixture will last in the refrigerator for several hours, so you can even make them up early in the day and then just give them a shake before pouring and serving.

Rimming a Shot Glass with Colorful Sprinkles

I rimmed each shot glass with sprinkles by dipping them in corn syrup first. You can also use honey or maple syrup. I suggest using nonpareils for this rather than big jimmies because they’re more dainty. Sugar would be okay too, but it’ll dissolve faster.

ingredients in frosting shots

Vodka In Your Frosting Shots

As with all cocktail recipes, the strength of your frosting shots is personal preference. I found we preferred 2:1 frosting to vodka, but if you want it less strong, just use less vodka. It might take some trial and error to find your perfect match.

I used plain vodka, but I think a flavored one would work well too. Just remember that frosting is super sweet, so a sweet vodka will just make it even more so. I want to try these frosting shots with chocolate frosting, too!

These are perfect for a birthday, a girls night in, or even date night. Plus they’re pretty!! (Remember I’m addicted to sprinkles. 🙂 )

Speaking of sprinkles, chocolate cake batter ice cream with sprinkles or snickerdoodle sprinkle cookies would be great to pair up with your vodka shots.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frosting canned or from scratch; try vanilla or cream cheese or chocolate
  • 2-4 ounces vodka depending on how strong you want it
  • Sprinkles and corn syrup or honey for rimming the glasses

Instructions

  • To rim the glasses: place corn syrup or honey on a small plate and sprinkles in a small bowl. Dip the rim of each glass in the sticky syrup, then in the sprinkles.
  • If using canned frosting, heat it until it’s warm and pourable but not too hot (15-25 seconds for most microwaves). If using a homemade frosting, make sure it is very room temperature and smooth. Pour into a jar or something with a tight fitting lid. Add the vodka, then seal and shake vigorously, until the frosting is mixed with the vodka.
  • Pour into glasses and serve. You can also let this sit for up to 3 hours, then shake and pour before serving. They’ll last in the glasses at least an hour before starting to separate.

Peanut Butter Cup Martini

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are some of the best candies out there and I thought turning it into this dessert martini would be a great idea–and it is! It uses real peanut butter and chocolate milk, as well as chocolate liqueur and vodka. They all work so well together in creating this peanut butter cup martini.

I drizzle chocolate syrup in my martini glass before pouring the drink in and it added the extra chocolate layer! And I of course put a peanut butter cup on the martini glass rims! This drink is great for any occasion and anyone who likes peanut butter cups will love this recipe. It’s a decadent cocktail that really does taste like a peanut butter cup!

ingredients with peanut butter cup martini laid out on a grey table.

Ingredients Needed

  • Creamy Peanut Butter: I recommend using no-stir (not natural) peanut butter
  • Vodka: You can use vanilla vodka as well, any brand
  • Creme De Cocoa: Any brand, but use the clear kind.
  • Chocolate Milk: Any kind of chocolate milk (fat content/nondairy)

How to make Peanut Butter Martini

  • Add peanut butter to a microwave safe bowl and heat 30-45 seconds or until pourable.
  • Pour peanut butter into an EMPTY cocktail shaker. Add vodka, chocolate liqueur, and chocolate milk. Do not add ice at this point. Close the shaker and shake vigorously to combine the peanut butter with the other ingredients.
  • Add ice to the shaker, replace the lid, and shake again to chill.
  • Rim glass with chocolate sauce or add a drizzle of chocolate syrup around the sides and bottom of glass. Strain drink into glass. Serve with a peanut butter cup for garnish.

Expert Tips

  • If you don’t have chocolate milk, low fat milk will work as well, or nondairy, you’ll just need to add some chocolate sauce to make the drink more chocolatey.
  • Sprinkle chopped peanut butter cups on top!
  • I love serving this in a traditional martini glass or a coupe glass.

Best Cosmopolitan Drink

A classic cosmo cocktail is my absolute favorite martini recipe and I never realized how easy they are to make at home. This drink became all the rage in the 1990s – that’s when I discovered how much I like it.

I love going out for a drink, but sometimes drink prices – especially for cocktails – are so expensive…plus I like being in my pajamas. So, I say let’s have an at-home happy hour, shall we? And I have the perfect drink for you to try: a classic cosmopolitan! You just need fresh lime juice, vodka, cranberry juice, and triple sec.

I’ve been making this cocktail for years – I first fell in love with it the night I got engaged – and have been loving them ever since.

ingredients in cocktail set up

Cosmopolitan Cocktail Ingredients

You only need four ingredients to make it. It’s sweet, tart and pink – perfect for a girl’s night happy hour, but the fellas love them, too (my husband included).

  • Vodka – pick your favorite brand! I love Tito’s but I know Absolut Citron Vodka is good too, it adds more citrus flavor. Just use a top shelf vodka so you enjoy the drink more.
  • Triple sec – also called orange liqueur or cointreau, this adds a pop of orange flavor
  • Cranberry juice – Use unsweetened cranberry juice to give the drink it’s signature pink color and adds tartness, but you can also use sweetened if you like a sweeter drink.
  • Lime juice – adds a fresh splash of citrus, plus a slice of lime for garnish.
  • Simple Syrup – I do not add simple syrup to my drink becuse I find the triple sec adds enough sugar. But if you want a sweeter drink add some to taste.
Cosmopolitan drink being poured into the clear glass by the gold shaker.

How to Make a Cosmo Martini

  • Add all ingredients to a shaker full of ice, secure the cap and shake it for at least 10 seconds. I took a mixology class once and the bartender told us the secret to a good martini is how long you shake it!
  • Open it up strain the drink into the glass. Add a slice of lime for garnish!

Make a pitcher of Cosmopolitan Drink

The recipe I’m sharing is for one drink, but you can easily scale it up and make a big batch of cosmopolitans for dinner parties – or a bachelorette party!

I often like to mix it all and then shake as I go, so I’m not measuring out ingredients during a party.

To scale up your drink: multiply the ingredients by the number of cocktails you’ll need. I figure two per person!

Just mix all of the ingredients in a pitcher and keep it the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve the drinks. Then you can shake and serve individual cosmos when you’re ready.

Tip From Dorothy

Expert Tips

  • You will also need a martini glass and a cocktail shaker. Use a chilled cocktail glass for an even icier cocktail!
  • The shaker makes a big difference in preparing the drink. It’s an easy way to mix the ingredients, but it also quickly chills the drink with ice. That way, you don’t have to add ice to the actual drink which can dilute it.
  • Some restaurants will serve this drink with an orange twist or orange peel, but I prefer a lime garnish.
  • Don’t like vodka? Substitute gin!

FAQs

Is cosmopolitan a strong drink?

I think this is the perfect cosmopolitan recipe, but feel free to play around with it and adjust to your liking! You can add or reduce the vodka to adjust the strength.

Is cosmopolitan a sweet drink?

This is the perfect balance of sweet and tart for my taste but if you want a sweeter drink you can add some simple syrup or more juice or triple sec. For a stronger or less sweet drink, reduce the triple sec.

Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe

Not only is this homemade hot cocoa mix recipe easy to make, but it also makes making hot chocolate even easier! It has the best, rich chocolate taste that is perfect for the colder months! Add some candy canes and you have the perfect holiday treat!

Recipes like this one make for the perfect holiday gifts! Just add a bit of the mix to a mason jar and give it out as a present. It will be the simplest gift that keeps on giving! Hot chocolate mix will never disappoint.

Ingredients Needed

  • Milk Chocolate Chips: You can also use bittersweet chocolate chips or semi-sweet.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: You can also substitute dutch-process cocoa powder.
  • Powdered Sugar: I use confectioners’ sugar for sweetness because it dissolves easier than granulated sugar.
  • Salt: Just a pinch of salt brings out the flavor of the chocolate.
  • Cornstarch: This helps thicken the chocolate. It’s the secret ingredient!
  • Cinnamon: Optional, but can add some spice into this drink recipe! You could also add a pinch of nutmeg, pumpkin spice, or any spices, like cayenne for a Mexican Hot Chocolate.

How to make Hot Chocolate Mix

  • Freeze the chocolate chips for at least 10 minutes. Pulse the frozen chips in a food processor until they are small crumbles. (If you don’t do this when they are frozen they’ll melt in the processor!)
  • Whisk together crumbled chocolate chips, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, salt, cornstarch, and cinnamon (if using) in a large bowl. Place in a plastic bag or airtight container. Makes a big batch: 4 cups mix.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of mix to 1 cup hot milk (use any kind of milk or soy or almond). Stir in a mug and serve with whipped cream or marshmallows.

Expert Tips

  • You can add vanilla extract to the finished mug of cocoa or scrape some vanilla beans into the mix.
  • Add a flavored creamer into the hot chocolate, like peppermint or pumpkin spice to make yourself a flavored hot chocolate!
  • Add mini marshmallows and candy canes into the drink as well to make it the ultimate hot chocolate recipe made from hot cocoa mix!
  • You can also add any kid of milk to fit what you like! Coconut milk and almond milk would both taste great with this hot chocolate mix!

FAQs

Crockpot Apple Cider with Caramel

Crockpot apple cider couldn’t be easier to make. I added the cider, and the other delicious ingredients to my crockpot and turned it on. It really is so simple! In the fall, you can find apple cider at every grocery store, but if it’s off season or you can’t seem to find it, check the refrigerated aisle. This drink is sure to warm you up on a crisp fall day!

sliced apples and cinnamon sticks in a black crockpot.

Ingredients Needed

  • Apple Cider: Cider is important – don’t use apple juice for best results (it’s not as rich of an apple flavor).
  • Cinnamon sticks: You have to have cinnamon with apple cider!
  • Caramel ice cream topping – You can use my homemade caramel recipe or grab it from the store.

Variation: SPIKED Cider

You will need vanilla or caramel vodka to deliciously spike this recipe! If you want it spiked, it’s barely any more work. Simply get your vodka and add it to the mug prior to adding all the other ingredients–then you have yourself a Spiked Caramel Apple Cider!

How to make Crockpot Apple Cider

  • Place apple cider, cinnamon sticks, and caramel ice cream topping in a 5-7 quart crockpot. Stir to combine. Heat on high for 2-4 hours or until hot. Serve plain or make an adult cocktail.
  • For each adult cocktail: add 1 ounce vodka to a mug and top with 1-2 cups of cider. Top with whipped cream, caramel sauce, and a cookie for garnish.

Expert Tips

  • I love using vanilla vodka, but you can spike this caramel apple cider cocktail with so many different kinds of alcohol: bourbon, whiskey, or caramel vodka are just a few to choose from.
  • If you don’t want to use the crockpot, then pour some cider in a glass and add some caramel. Then heat it in the microwave.

Expert Tips

  • Add some flax or Greek yogurt to it to give it more fiber or protein.

  • Add a scoop of protein powder to make this smoothie more of a meal.

Spiked Pumpkin Spice Latte – Iced or Hot

To me, the fall season starts when all the pumpkin spice things start getting put out and this recipe is the best one to kick off the season. This homemade pumpkin spice latte can be made hot or iced depending on your mood when making it. You can also top it with cold foam!

Now this may be called a spiked latte, but you can make it alcohol free! This way anyone can enjoy this latte. Whether you want an alcoholic beverage or a basic at home Pumpkin Spice Latte–this recipe is for you.

ingredients in spiced pumpkin latte.

Ingredients Needed

  • Strong Brewed Coffee: Can’t have a latte without coffee.  You can also use espresso if you have an espresso machine – or used iced coffee!
  • Vanilla Vodka: If you can’t find vanilla vodka, add a few drops of vanilla extract to the drink.
  • Cinnamon Whiskey: Fireball gives an amazing spiked flavor to the drink.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice Coffee Creamer: This is a main part of the latte, but also the main ingredient for cold foam if wanted. You can use regular or sugar free.
  • Whipped Cream Caramel: Or cinnamon for garnish!

How to make a spiked PSL

  • Hot Coffee: Add coffee, liquor, and creamer to a mug. Top with whipped cream, caramel, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Serves 1.
  • Iced Coffee: Add coffee, liquor, and creamer to a glass full of ice. Top with pumpkin cold foam (see step 3).
  • Pumpkin Cold Foam: Place pumpkin creamer in a glass and froth with a milk frother until foamy. Pour over iced drink.
  • To make for a crowd: Place 12 cups coffee, 1 1/2 cups vanilla vodka, 3/4 cup cinnamon whiskey, and 1-2 cups creamer in a crockpot on warm setting. Serve with whipped cream.

Pumpkin Spice Cold Foam

Cold Foam has become a staple in many iced latte drinks over time. This one is special because it is pumpkin flavored cold foam. Cold Foam is super easy to make since it only involves one ingredient and a milk frother! It is a must try for your iced drink.

Expert Tips

  • Although this recipe calls for fireball, you can omit that. As well as, you can use any vodka you would like.
  • To make it non-alcoholic you don’t have to do anything special. Just remove all alcohol from the recipe.
  • You want to make sure that your cold foam is frothy before pouring it over your drink.

What is an Apple Cider Mimosa?

This mimosa is great for the fall months because of its amazing apple taste. It may sound sweet because of the apple cider, but it is all dependent on what kind of vodka and bubbles you use.

This recipe really is so easy and can be made for one person or a party. It would be great at Thanksgiving or any fall get together, and it would be great for any evening spent alone! Get into all the fall feels with this drink!

Expert Tips

  • To make this a Caramel Apple Mimosa: drizzle caramel sauce all over the glass!
  • Apple Cider is really popular in the fall months and can usually be found in the grocery store produce section with the apples.
  • For the champagne or prosecco, if you like your drink less sweet, go with a Brut. If you want a sweeter cocktail, go with a dryer one. The dryer the sparkling wine is, the sweeter it gets.

FAQs

Can you make mimosas ahead of time?

You can! To do this, mix all the ingredients except the champagne, then add the champagne in right before serving!

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe

Smoothies are really fun because they are so customizable. You can change so many of the ingredients to match your lifestyle, like choosing whether or not you want to make it dairy free or if you want to add-in something extra. As long as you have the staple strawberries, bananas and apples–you’re all good!

Apples are so great for smoothies because they add so much flavor, but it’s not overpowering. When it comes to the fruit it can be fresh or frozen, either way this smoothie tastes amazing!

This is an easy recipe with ingredients you probably already have on hand, and you can vary it to fit your needs and likes!

Easy Homemade Chocolate Sauce

Have you ever thought about making your own chocolate sauce? You may be wondering why make a homemade chocolate sauce recipe- like, isn’t this the same thing as hot fudge?

Hot fudge has a rich, thick, and chocolatey flavor similar to this chocolate sauce recipe, but it’s the texture and process that makes the difference. Hot fudge needs to be reheated every time you use it because it hardens up.

That’s why I made this easy chocolate syrup! You still get the delicious flavor and use of hot fudge but without the extra steps of warming it up and letting it cool: This homemade chocolate sauce is ready whenever you are.

You can pour it over ice cream, or in milk for a hot chocolate or my favorite, an iced mocha coffee. You’re going to love the endless uses of this one easy recipe.

ingredients in chocolate sauce laid out on a counter.

Ingredients Needed

  • Cocoa powder: You’ll need half a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder – you can use regular or Dutch process.
  • Water: if you want a creamier and thicker chocolate sauce, use milk or coffee creamer instead of water.
  • Sugar: granulated sugar sweetens the chocolate syrup.
  • Vanilla: I’m using a half teaspoon of vanilla extract to give the syrup tons more flavor.

How to make chocolate sauce

  1. Whisk together all ingredients in a small saucepan and boil over medium-low heat; cocoa, water, sugar, and salt.
  2. Mix until the mixture is thick and the cocoa has completely dissolved.
  3. Remove the mixture from the heat and add your vanilla.
  4. Pour the melted mixture into a jar or covered container.
  5. Cool at room temperature, then cover and store in the refrigerator.
a spoon dripping chocolate sauce over vanilla ice cream in a clear bowl.

Expert Tips

  • For a deep chocolate sauce, use Dutch process cocoa
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks
  • The sauce shouldn’t thicken in the refrigerator but if it does for some reason, just heat it to thin it out.

FAQs

What is the difference between fudge sauce and chocolate sauce?

Hot fudge sauces are usually made with baking chocolate and/or chocolate chips and heavy cream. When the hot fudge is chilled, it hardens to a peanut butter texture, so it needs to be heated again to turn into liquid. This chocolate sauce recipe is always ready to be used and uses basic ingredients.

What is the thickening agent for chocolate sauce?

Cooking the sugar helps to thicken the sauce – although it stays thin even when refrigerated. Using milk instead of water will give a thicker sauce.

How do you store homemade chocolate sauce?

Store this chocolate sauce in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
