Blondies for the 4th of July

This easy blondie recipe is next-level delicious when you add my tips and tricks. It always turns out so rich, gooey, and is loaded with all the goodies.

These 4th of July blondies are a showstopper dessert that will light up any celebration. I call them Fireworks Blondies because the sprinkles and M&Ms look like an explosion of July Fourth fireworks.

If you’re making a dessert for the 4th of July, then you need to make a grab-and-go food. And these blondies are PERFECT for that. Plus, the kids love them so prepare for them to disappear FAST!

The best part about baking cookie bars? You don’t need to worry about them spreading while baking – Just mix your ingredients, spread them on a pan, and viola! An incredible batch of firework blondies that look like the 4th of July fireworks.

red white and blue sprinkles and candy on a white plate.

Ingredients needed

  • Butter: I always use unsalted butter because it’s easier to control the flavor. For this 4th of July cookie bar, we’ll use melted butter for a gooey and chewy texture.
  • Sugar: I am using light brown sugar because it gives these blondie bars an incredible caramelized flavor. When you measure the sugar, be sure to pack it. Packing the brown sugar will ensure there are no lumps or pockets of air inside the measuring cup.
  • Egg: I’m using large eggs to bind all the ingredients better together. Be sure the eggs are at room temperature before mixing them into the batter. It just helps with the mixing process.
  • Baking powder: let’s not confuse the baking powder with the baking soda. I’ll be using a teaspoon of baking powder to help these blondie bars rise
  • M&Ms: you can just use sweet chocolate chips instead but I love to add M&Ms for the pop of red white, and blue colors. I have tried these blondies with butterscotch chips and oh my… so good. If you can’t pick, it’s ok to use M&Ms and chocolate chips because why not?
  • Sprinkles: I’m using patriotic sprinkles to make these blondie bars into firework blondie bars.

How to make blondies

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F then line a metal baking pan with parchment paper or foil and spray generously with cooking spray.
  2. Cream butter and brown sugar with a stand or a hand mixer until crumbly.
  3. Mix in eggs and vanilla until smooth. Then add salt, baking powder, and flour to mix together until evenly combined.
  4. Stir in M&Ms and sprinkles.
  5. Spread in prepared pan. The mixture is wet so it’s best to spray your hands with cooking spray and then smooth the dough with your hands to get an even layer.
  6. Top with extra M&Ms if desired to make them look prettier.
  7. Bake for about 22-25 minutes until they start to turn golden.
stacked blondies with red white and blue sprinkles mixed in.

Expert tips

  • I love these blondies a bit under-baked. They’ll finish baking as they cool and you don’t want them over-baked.
  • For best results, bake these in a metal pan. Glass will make them brown too fast on top and they’ll be raw in the middle.
  • For my chocolate chip cookie fans, you can make these into chocolate chip cookie bars by adding some chocolate chips to the batter. You can use an equal amount of chips as the M&Ms.
  • If you love peanut butter chocolate, then add some peanut butter chips in place of the chocolate chips or M&Ms. Just be sure to use the same measurement listed for M&Ms.

FAQs

Why didn’t my blondies bake through?

Your blondies probably didn’t make through because they needed to be left in the oven a bit longer. Bake them for about 22-25 minutes and watch for them to turn golden brown.

Do blondies need baking powder?

Yes. You need to use baking powder for this blondie recipe to help the cookie bar rise during the baking process.

Can you freeze blondies?

Yes. You can freeze blondies for up to 1 month in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag.

If you love making sugar cookies for holidays, then these 4th of July Cookies are ones you should make this summer! I love decorated sugar cookies but I always have a hard time making the perfect decorations – until now.

Buttercream Sugar Cookies

These easy tips will show you how easy it is to decorate sugar cookies in patriotic colors – and they’ll look like a professional made them!

I make sugar cookies every year for Christmas; they’re our absolute favorite. As much as I’d love to make royal icing and do flooding and super intricate designs, that is just not me. I’m more of a buttercream cookie frosting gal, even better if you just frost with a knife and load on the sprinkles.

BUT! Sometimes you want to make cute decorative sugar cookies, but you want an easy way to do it where they’ll look great every time. That’s when you need THIS tutorial.

These Patriotic Sugar Cookies are so easy to make and look how fun and festive they are – and you just need some pastry bags and a couple of tips to do it. ANYONE can make pretty sugar cookies, I promise. If I can do it, so can you!

star cookie decorated like an american flag

You can use my favorite vanilla cut out sugar cookie recipe for these cookies or my newest obsession: Chocolate Cut Out Cookies. They’re easy and delicious and they work every time. You could also use a package mix or a refrigerated dough.

I love to roll my dough right after mixing and then chill the flat sheets because it cuts the chill time in half.

Be sure to bake the dough COLD so that the cookies don’t spread. I talk about all the details and tips and tricks in that sugar cookie post.

For 4th of July cookies, you’ll want star cookie cutters. (See below for product links.) I used a pack of nested cookie cutters, but you can use any shape or size.

Equipment

If you’re just using a knife to decorate your sugar cookies with icing, then you don’t need lots of equipment outside of cookie cutters. However, to do this method of decorative icing, you do need a few things like pastry bags, couplers, and tips.

Here are the items I used:

chocolate star sugar cookies with red white and blue frosting

Prepare your Pastry Bag

Once you have your cookies baked and cooled, make your frosting. You can use my cookie frosting or you can get 3 cans of frosting from the grocery store.

Divide the frosting into three bowls. Color one red, one blue and leave the other white.

Prepare your pastry bag. Here’s how:

  • The coupler has two parts: coupler and ring. Remove the ring and place the coupler in the pastry bag. Push it down as far as it will go.
  • Note where you need to cut the tip off the bag, then push the coupler up a bit, cut off the tip, and push the coupler back down. It should be almost even with the hole.
  • Place the desired tip on the coupler and place the ring over the top and screw it tight.

Then, fill your pastry bag and you’re ready to decorate.

How to decorate 4th of July Cookies

To decorate the basic stars you can:

  • Outline the star with one color and fill it in with another, either by dragging your piping bag or making little stars.
  • Pipe a bunch of blue stars all over one of the cookies.
  • Write a U, S, A on three of the cookies
  • Cover the whole cookie with one color and then press it upside down in sprinkles to coat.

Tie-Dye Star

To make the large star with the tie-dye pattern, add all three colors to one piping bag and then swirl or pipe stars all over. Use this tutorial to make the swirled frosting.

You can also do the toothpick method: frost your cookie the color you want and then pipe stripes in other colors. Use a toothpick to drag through the stripes to create that criss cross pattern.

This one is my favorite! It’s best to do this pattern on a larger cookie.

To decorate the flag:

  1. Outline one star point and half another with blue frosting. Connect in the middle and fill it in.
  2. Next to the blue half, pipe a red half. On the star point to the right of that one, pipe white on half, then red on the other half, continuing, alternating the colors until all the points are decorated.
  3. Pipe white stars on top the blue section.

FAQs

How do you store sugar cookies?

Buttercream sugar cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days. The frosting will semi-dry, so be sure to stack them between sheets of wax paper so they don’t stick to each other.

How do you freeze decorated sugar cookies?

You can easily freeze these! Lay them in a single layer on a cookie sheet covered with parchment, wax paper, or a silicone baking mat. Freeze. Once frozen, layer them in between sheets of paper towels in an airtight bag or container and store up to 3 months.

Spiral Cookies are my absolute favorite cookie recipe – all year long. I love making them for the 4th of July with red and blue sanding sugar, but you can make these all year with ANY colors. They’re soft and crunchy, buttery and perfectly sweet!

spiral cookies with red and blue sugar

4th of July Spiral Cookies

Everyone will admire the patriotic swirl on these spiral cookies but they’ll love the flavor more: these 4th of July cookies are buttery, soft, and have just the right amount of sugar! They’re like butter cookies but rolled with sugar – absolutely delicious!

Although I’m baking these specifically for the Fourth of July, they can be made for any holiday or special occasion. All you need to do is follow this simple recipe and change out the color of the sanding sugar.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • The flavor of these is one of our absolute favorites – I add almond extract for a delicious twist!
  • They’re soft but also crunchy from the sugar inside.
  • You can make them ahead and even freeze the cookies!

Ingredients needed

  • Sugar: I’m using granulated sugar in the cookie dough mixture to sweeten these sugar cookies
  • Butter: I like to use unsalted butter since we don’t want the cookie dough to taste too salty. Make sure your butter is at room temperature so it will be easier to mix.
  • Almond extract: this adds a wonderful flavor to any baked goods, but if you don’t like almonds or are allergic, you can use lemon or vanilla extract instead.
  • Sanding sugar: depending on your occasion, use any colors you like. Since this recipe is for the 4th of July, I’ll be using red and blue colored sugar.

How to make spiral cookies

  1. Cream a cup granulated sugar and butter in the bowl. Using butter that’s at room temperature makes this creaming process so much easier.
  2. Add almond extract, salt, and egg and mix all together until evenly combined.
  3. Slowly stir in your flour and mix until just combined. It’s going to make a nice thick dough.
  4. Divide the cookie dough into two pieces.
  5. Cover the top of your dough with wax paper. The dough should be sandwiched in the wax paper.
  6. Press the dough flat with your hands. Then use a rolling pin to evenly press the dough into a rectangle shape.
  7. Sprinkle the sanding sugars in lines across the dough. Alternate between red and blue stripes (or whatever colors you’re using). Repeat with the second half of the dough.
  8. Roll up the dough carefully. It may be a bit tricky, especially if your home is hot but let the wax paper help you.
  9. Chill your rolled doughs in the refrigerator until firm for about 1 hour up to overnight.
  10. Slice rolls of cookie dough into inch-thick slices. Place the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Since these cookies don’t have any baking powder, they don’t spread at all so you can place them close together if you need to.
  11. Bake at 350° for 6-9 minutes or until the edges begin to brown.

Expert tips

  • You may want to rotate the baking sheets halfway through baking depending on how your oven bakes, to ensure even baking.
  • You don’t have to be exact when rolling these out, that’s why I love this recipe.
  • Peel off wax paper in between pressing and rolling to avoid the dough from sticking to the paper.

Easy 4th of July Cupcake Tops

4th of July cupcake decorating is a new tradition for me since it makes a festive and fun time in the kitchen. Plus, these fireworks cupcakes are a showstopper! They always turn out looking perfect and so professional.

I always serve patriotic cupcakes for my 4th of July party since they are an easy dessert and they decorate the table for my guests. Double win!

What I love most about these Cupcake Tops for the 4th of July is how easy and quick it is to make. Just frost two easy layers of blue and white then top it off with a red berry. That’s it! They always turn out perfect.

Ingredients Needed

  • Cupcakes: use either chocolate or vanilla cupcakes
  • Frosting: vanilla frosting to add some blue food color later
  • Food coloring: blue food coloring to dye the vanilla frosting layer
  • Cool Whip: this will lay on top of the blue vanilla frosting
  • Berries: strawberries or raspberries to finish off with red

How to make Cupcake Tops for the 4th of July

  1. Bake and cool your cupcakes to room temperature.
  2. Tint your vanilla frosting blue with a few drops of the blue food coloring then place it in a pastry bag fitted with a round tip. In a ziploc bag, place your cool whip in and cut the tip off to help frost.
  3. Frost each cupcake with a bit of blue frosting. Top the blue with the white cool whip. Place a strawberry on top to finish.

  1. Bake cupcakes according to package directions and let them cool down to room temperature.

These homemade funfetti cupcakes have a fantastic vanilla buttercream frosting, you’ll find yourself reaching for more just for the frosting. These are my holiday go-to recipe – so easy and festive. Just what I need for any celebration!

Ingredients Needed

  • Flour: I carefully measured the all-purpose flour
  • Butter: unsalted butter is best when baking – I melt my butter to keep the cupcakes moist.
  • Sugar: granulated sugar is perfect in yellow cupcakes.
  • Eggs: large eggs at room temperature to help add more fluff to the cupcakes
  • Buttermilk: I love the extra flavor and moisture buttermilk gives to cupcakes, but you can easily swap milk or nondairy milk.
  • Sprinkles: I’m using patriotic sprinkles of red, white, and blue!
  • Powdered sugar: a must-have ingredient to make any frosting’s texture perfect
  • Heavy whipping cream: my secret frosting ingredient for fluffy frosting!

How to make Funfetti Cupcakes for the 4th

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare cupcake pans with liners. Whisk salt, baking powder, and flour in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.
  2. Cream sugar into melted butter until smooth.
  3. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
  4. Add dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the flour, mixing gently between each addition. Mix until just combined. I always scrape the sides of the bowl to get every ounce of ingredient in my batter. We’re not wasting anything in this cupcake recipe!
  5. Stir in your patriotic sprinkles. So fun seeing all the colors come together! Pour cupcake batter into prepared pans and bake as directed. I baked my cupcakes for 14-17 minutes.
  6. Cool completely at room temperature. Then remove from cupcake pans to then frost.
  7. Mix frosting ingredients and frost cupcakes as desired – top with more sprinkles!

Expert Tips

  • This recipe is also delicious with cream cheese frosting or chocolate buttercream.
  • Cupcakes are done baking when a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cupcake.
  • For best results, use jimmies for sprinkles – a good quality brand, not cheap sprinkles.
  • If you’re using a hand mixer to make your frosting, be sure to use a very large bowl to avoid wearing the powdered sugar.

FAQs

How do I know when the cupcakes are done baking?

A good trick to tell if your cupcakes are done baking is to gently poke the top with a spoon and check if it leaves a dent. If it leaves a dent, then it needs more time. If it bounces back up, then it’s ready.

What sprinkles are best for funfetti cupcakes?

I always use jimmie sprinkles because they do a great job at mixing in the batter without bleeding too much color.

Do funfetti cupcakes need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Store your Funfetti cupcakes in an airtight container.

Fireworks 4th of July Cake

Can you spot the stars and stripes? This American cake is a serious showstopper! What makes it so showstopping is the patriotic sprinkles which help hide any flaws that happen in the assembly. You are going to love how easy it is to put this cake together and will be even happier with the results.

I made the first layer of this 4th of July cake red velvet and I followed my red velvet cupcakes recipe for it. And the second layer is made of Homemade Funfetti Cake. But both cake layers can easily be made with a cake mix.

To finish off this layer cake recipe, just coat it with an easy cream cheese and vanilla frosting. Then lots of red, white, and blue sprinkles to hide any mistakes in this delicious American flag cake.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • So festive and fun!
  • In between each layer is a decadent frosting: cream cheese frosting to go with the red velvet and vanilla frosting to go with the funfetti
  • An easy cake to make with the family- the kids will love it
  • You can choose between using a cake mix or making it 100% from scratch

Ingredients needed

  • Sugar: I always use granulated sugar for my cakes
  • Cocoa powder: unsweetened cocoa powder since we are adding sugar
  • Baking soda and Baking Powder: for leavening – different for the different cakes so be sure to read the recipe.
  • Buttermilk: I learned how to make buttermilk at home so I will be using that instead of the store-bought
  • Vegetable oil: it’s the best oil to use for baking since it keeps the cake so moist
  • Vinegar: I’m using white vinegar to help the baking soda rise
  • Vanilla extract: makes the cake taste so good, especially with the buttermilk
  • Food coloring: red food coloring to make this chocolate cake a red velvet one
  • Butter: melted to make a soft and moist cake
  • Sprinkles: I used nonpareils, but you can also use jimmies
  • Frostings: Cream cheese frosting and vanilla buttercream!

Semi-Homemade Help

Want to cut down on some of the steps to make this cake? Here is how you can make it semi-homemade with mixes, either using all of these or just pick and choose. I love using homemade frosting and cake mix – no one knows it’s a mix with homemade frosting!

yellow and red layered cake covered in patriotic sprinkles on a white plate.

How to make a 4th of July cake

MAKE THE RED VELVET CAKE:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F then butter and flour two 9-inch cake rounds.
  2. Whisk the dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa, and salt. Then whisk the rest of the ingredients in a measuring cup: buttermilk, oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  3. Stir both wet and dry ingredients together in one large bowl. Once fully combined, stir in the red food coloring carefully.
  4. Pour the cake batter into one of the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 20-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.

MAKE THE FUNFETTI CAKE:

  1. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  2. Mix butter and sugar in a large bowl. Then add your eggs one at a time and finally the vanilla.
  3. Add buttermilk with the dry ingredients, and mix until the batter comes together.
  4. Stir in the patriotic sprinkles.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs sticking to it. Cool completely before frosting.

How to assemble 4th of July Cake

  1. Torte each cake layer. (This means cut it in half horizontally.)
  2. Frost the red velvet cake layer with half the cream cheese frosting. Then top with half the funfetti cake and frost with the vanilla frosting. Then frost the entire cake with a light layer of vanilla frosting.
  3. Sprinkle the cake with your hands, pressing handfuls of sprinkles into the sides and all over the top of the cake.
  4. Chill until set then serve at room temperature.

Expert Tips

  • Frost your American flag cake over the sink. The sprinkles will go everywhere if you don’t!
  • You can skip torting the cakes and just make a 2 layer cake if you want.

Funfetti Flag Cake Recipe

This American flag cake recipe is one of my favorite Summer dessert recipes! The creative berry topping is so fun to put together for the Fourth of July.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stop smiling at this 4th of July cake. Not only does it look delicious with the vibrant berries and fluffy frosting, but it always turns out looking amazing!

For my Patriotic flag cake, I used a combination of raspberries and sliced strawberries for the red stripes and blueberries for the stars.

Now, a normal American Flag has 13 red and white stripes but my cake doesn’t… and that’s okay! I think most people get it. Since we’re using berries, there wouldn’t be room for 13 stripes on a 9×13-inch cake.

FAQs

Why did my cake sink in the middle?

Your cake probably sunk for numerous reasons but the main one being too much baking powder or the cake batter wasn’t mixed well enough.

How to decorate a flag cake?

Place your colored berries in an American Flag pattern over the frosting or use tinted icing. It’s so fun to let your creativity flow with this!

These cookie bars are our favorite for the 4th of July and Memorial Day! You will love these cookies because:

ingredients in fireworks sprinkles cookies.
  • Cream of Tartar: This keeps the bars nice and soft like sugar cookies should be. Cream of tartar is my secret ingredient!
  • Unsalted Butter: Be sure to soften your butter before making the cookies. If you need to substitute salted butter, omit the salt in the recipe.
  • Sugar: Sugar cookies typically use granulated sugar. You’ll also need powdered sugar for the frosting.
  • Sprinkles: You can use nonpareils or jimmies. I prefer jimmies, but either one works. Find red and blue sprinkles on amazon!
  • Milk: This is for the frosting. You can use regular milk or heavy cream.

Be sure to see the recipe card below for full ingredients & instructions!

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together until nice and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg, then mix in vanilla extract, the mix in the all purpose flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
  3. Mix in the sprinkles.
  4. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, then cool.
  5. Make your vanilla buttercream frosting by creaming your butter and your powdered sugar then mixing in vanilla and milk as needed for consistency.

Substitutions and Tips

  • Flavoring: Add 1 teaspoon almond or lemon extract to the bars for extra flavor.
  • Use ANY color sprinkles for any occasion.
  • Jimmie sprinkles are best for baking as they tend not to dissolve.
  • Want semi-homemade? Use a can of frosting to save time.
  • Color your frosting red and blue or make a flag decoration on top.

Sometimes the only way a cake is going to happen is with cake mix. This cake recipe is the perfect way to jazz up your July 4th dessert table with something new that isn’t complicated.

The first time I made this tie-dye cake for a Fourth of July party, I instantly regretted not doubling up on this recipe. Everyone will gobble this up! Shortcuts are lifesavers so using the cake mix will help you make dessert even quicker.

Get ready to let the colors red, white, and blue explode in every single bite! This special 4th of July cake will have your taste buds bursting with excitement.

Ingredients Needed

  • Cake mix: use white cake mix so the food coloring can show
  • Instant Pudding Mix: I love adding pudding mix to my cakes for flavor and to keep them soft and moist.
  • Vegetable oil: It’s easier to mix this cake with oil!
  • Food coloring: to keep the 4th of July theme going, I’ll be using colors red and blue
  • Powdered sugar: an essential ingredient for any cake frosting recipe
  • Sprinkles: you can use any kind you like but I’ll use red and blue to match the theme

How to make bundt cake with cake mix

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Generously grease and flour a fluted bundt pan
  • Mix your cake mix, pudding mix, eggs,  milk, and oil in a large bowl using a hand mixer until the cake mixture is combined.
  • Color the cake batter by separating the mixture into 3 bowls. Color one of them red, one of them blue, and leave one white.
  • Bake for about 35-45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cake sit in the pan to cool for about 15 minutes, then turn it out onto a plate to cool completely.
  • Make the frosting by whisking the milk into the powdered sugar. Drizzle on the cake and sprinkle with sprinkles.
